That's an excellent article. Obviously the Chinese realise the true future value of Unocal's oil reserves and are willing to spend as much of their greenbacks as it takes to secure the profits. I expect they'll keep making these huge deals before they finally cut the leash to the USD let America's economy fold.

Looks to be a battle for UnoCal brewing. Today I wake up to read this:
Congress Moves to Block Unocal deal
and this:
China tells Congress to back off

This could be testy times for the US - Chinese relations. Or maybe not. Will this be a spark that starts a conflict or will cooler heads prevail, for now?

I wonder what would happen to your poll if I merged this thread into what was supposed to be the one-and-only CNOOC (China) and Unocal thread?

I had to merge four threads together so far. Valuable historical information becomes lost when one issue is scattered over so many threads.

IMHO your poll options suck too. They are all full of implications that cloud a voters choice.

What kind of BS is "Nothing. CNOOC will end up with Unocal, with help from White house"? CNOOC is offering 2 billion dollars more for Unocal than ChervonTexaco is. Did the White house give them that money?

This one is a real tough call.

China is kind of strange in their diplomacy and actions sometimes. Strange from my point of view any way.

If congress does block it and the US and China get more testy with each other look for China to take back Taiwan. Or at least move the plan up and to do it sooner rather then later.

Iraq is such a mess, there is no way we could effectively fight and defend Taiwan.

China is already accused of economic warfare they have enough dollars to kick us in the balls economically if they dump them.

Then end of life as we know it is fun. :-D There just so many possibilitys with the fall slow, fast, hard soft?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Eli', 'T')his one is a real tough call.

Many sources have said that this bid is a departure from the way China has #ucked up in the past over attempts to grab oil resources from the US. They were very sophisticated and western in their approach this time. They had answers for every concern that was raised. It is clear that they have done their homework this time. When the National Security issue was raised by the US they said that the oil was mostly in Asia so it wasn't really a US national concern. When the issue about loss of US jobs was raised by the US CNOOC said that they would not fire anyone.

What is happening now is that ChevronTexaco is complaining that CNOOC is getting too much of that money from the Chinese government as loans and it is unfair for ChevronTexaco to have to compete with the Chinese government for a private concern. Let's see how CNOOC retorts that one.

It seems to me that the White House might well oppose congressional involvement - thus facilitating the acquisition. Given the current administration's support of free trade, along with their opposition to tariffs that would impact free trade, it seems possible.

Unocal again

Unread postby Leanan » Wed 13 Jul 2005, 20:05:42

Congress is having hearings about China's bid for Unocal. A bunch of experts are warning that our national security is at stake. Unocal owns the natural gas reservoir that supplies Taiwan, which could make things interesting.

Lou Dobbs of CNN said flat out that oil is becoming increasingly scarce, and we should block China for that reason.

On the other hand, US dollars and treasury bills are certainly not scarce. Hmm, decisions, decisions.

Come on, Unocal production is 279.000 bpd, while China consumes 5 millions bpd. I don't see any major threat here.

What I find amazing is that they don't seem to connect the dots. Both Lou and the Republican Congressman he had on his show last night agreed that oil was a "finite resource," one that was increasingly "scarce" and "dear."

Isn't that cause for alarm, whether or not China buys Unocal? Apparently not. :-P

Lou Dobbs has a list of books he's read and recommends on his web site. Among them are two peak oil books, one fairly Pollyanna-ish, one downright nutty. (The Roberts book, and that "Bottomless Well" one.) I e-mailed him and suggested he read Simmons, Deffeyes, Goodstein, Heinberg, etc. Though maybe he has read them, and discounts them.

Wall Street Journal Questions Unocal Deal

Unread postby BabyPeanut » Wed 10 Aug 2005, 11:02:52

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Reserve Judgment In Deal for Unocal, Chevron Gambles On High Oil Prices
CEO, Battling Low Output,
Foresees Surge in Demand
And Global Supply Squeeze
The 'Brave New World' Speech

By RUSSELL GOLD
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
August 10, 2005; Page A1

With its planned purchase of Unocal Corp. for $18.1 billion, Chevron Corp. has landed the biggest oil acquisition in years and snatched a prize away from a government-controlled Chinese company.

But behind this victory lies a giant bet on the future of energy prices. If they stay high, Chevron Chief Executive David O'Reilly could be remembered for a stroke of genius. If they tumble, Chevron's results could suffer for many years to come because of the high price it paid for Unocal.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BabyPeanut', 'B')ut behind this victory lies a giant bet on the future of energy prices.

A few days ago my wife had the question "If the world really is in so much trouble wouldn't there be signs?"
I replied "The signs are everywhere all you need to do is look at them."

The majors know better than anyone about what's going on, and if they're making bets on high oil prices its probably not as much of a gamble as people think
Angry yet?
