$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Synapsid', 'T')anada,

Part of the drop in rail traffic is likely due to decreased transport of oil, coal, and fracking sand.

Good ol' POD.

I can vouch for the fact that CSX has a bunch of railroad oil tank cars sitting on siding rails south of their big Toledo rail yard. The spur that used to go to a stone quarry has a hundred of more cars parked on it in long term storage.

Subjectivist,

Yes, I'd read that a lot of cars have been stored. That stone quarry near Toledo is interesting: was it already closed so the rail line was available for use? What stone was quarried there?

ROCKMAN,

Thanks. I did not know that the rail-freight industry was so heavily dependent on coal.

Up to a third of profit! Wow.

Other than a few sand and gravel pits all the stone quarries around here are limestone. It gets used for building material, gravel road paving, and cement production. The quarry in question has been closed for well over a decade. Technically the spur goes south from the rail yard and ends at Stoney Ridge, Ohio. They started filling it up from the south end a few weeks ago, they have to put gaps for each road crossing so it's not one long set but more like dashes half a mile long separated by quarter mile gaps at the road crossings.

Subjectivist,

Thanks. Limestone in the Midwest is Palaeozoic in age; might be good fossils if you can sneak in and look. I envy you the chance.

Not (ahem) that I would suggest, or even condone, such activity. (ahem)

No worries, when the last ice sheet retreated it dumped glacial erratics all over this county east of Toledo. I have a good size limestone boulder in my yard they found while digging the foundation for this house in the mid 1970's and so do many of my neighbors. They were buried just far enough to allow farming, but not far enough for footers to be dug.
