Plastic Scintillators : where to obtain?

Unread postby rostov » Thu 07 Jul 2005, 04:08:13

Hi,

Just a curious question : where can I get/buy a simple and small plastic block (size of a matchbox?) without having to order in bulk? About 420-460nm wavelength detection will suffice.

Been ebay'ing and googling around -- most of the stuff is the plastic integrated to a photosensitive detector which feeds an electronical set of devices to measure the level of light released by the plastic. Or, they sell in huge plates / in bulk. *sigh*

Much thanks.

You observed it from the start
Now you’re a million miles apart
As we bleed another nation
So you can watch you favorite station
Now you eyes pop out your sockets
Dirty hands and empty pockets
Who? You!

ARGH. Thanks dmtu. For what it's worth, scintillators are usually referred to as devices powered (AC? DC definitely) to detect radiation. Simple mechanism is the plasticy solid that slows the alpha/beta/gamma rays and produces light as a result.

There are usually a range of photo-sensitive electronics/sensors (hence the power needed for these) to detect the amount/intensity of light from these scintillator materials, which translate to how intense the radiation is. The more intense, the more light, and hence the meter reads high. Further, different scintillator solids react in different intensities for a range of radiation (200-280nm), and hence the electronics are tailored according to that. Some detect alphas better, etc.

I'm not interested in the electronical portions of it (DIY kits, etc). I'm interested in the plasticy material itself. Just a small cube's worth. Unfortunately, they only sell in HUGE sheets of it.

Would appreciate for any links concerning purchasing/obtaining small amounts of plastic scintillators. Or pointers.

Thanks.

Geeze!! You probably want a spinthariscope, get one of those from ebay or www.unitednuclear.com, or just get a modern "geiger" counter, there are some decent Russian ones on the market and some very good US ones. Happy nuking!

First off (thanks to the server reboot/maintenance, I lost my initial thanking post), thanks tons for the link to the coated plastic scintillator! :) Does anyone want one as well?

2nd-ly, no, I won't get anything dependent on batteries or energy yet. Just the basics. I'll consider building my own scintillator if I want to (from e-bay...) but I just want the plastic.
