My Dental assistant could not deal with the truth and said she's had enough of "that Doom Nonsense". I gave her the following memo yesterday:

The world industrial fossil fueled infrastructure (WIFFI) is only made possible by surplus fungible energy/derivative products and surplus revenue from high quality crude oil. This is only made possible via a small number of large conventional oil deposits mostly located in the middle east. The various Price-of-Oil measures have no correlation to the state/sustainability of the WIFFI and is completely a function of various financialisation schemes.

It is with regret that I have to inform you that the world has been net oil energy negative for more than 40 years and is forcing the industrial infrastructure into bankruptcy as we speak. Since TINA (There Is No Alternative) is a grim fact, it is very likely the interconnected financial system will simply abruptly stop some time within 5 years due to illicit investment scheme exhaustion and thus 95% of the population will have no other alternative than to live in tents permanently.

Well I think Starving first that the vernacular you used was a little bit too sophisticated and that final line about living in tents a bit too dramatic. Maybe if you had just said to her, look civilization runs on a very potent energy source at a relatively cheap price. This energy source has reached peak and has begun diminishing so in tandem our civilization will diminish may have received a slight better reception.

I think ennui2 was right on target - except about the insanity part. To the worshippers of BAU you have to tread very carefully - otherwise you will upset their faith in their belief. Thus upsetting her world view and faith in such a brutal way will almost always give you a violent answer and anger.

Especially when using the written word to contact one must choose the wording carefully and ease them slowly into your perceived reality. This email that was shown at the top is waay too brutal and direct. Also the abbreviations unknown to normal people doenst make it better.

Indeed Cog. I could have made my comment general, but that was not my intention. The trait of building fragile and inconsistent, but highly integrated perceptions of the world is a general feature of humans - and the questioning of these almost always result in anger and/or tears.

Here in the Bible belt, it's likely the dental assistant would have agreed the world is coming to an end (Obama's fault) and that she and her family will be lifted into heaven to sit at Jesus' feet while I burn in hell. The rest of the visit would be she telling me how I can avoid that fate.
