Google's D-Wave 2X Quantum Computer 100 Million Times Faster Than Regular Computer Chip

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')n Dec. 8, Google and NASA announced that the D-Wave 2X turned up with an answer for an optimization problem within mere seconds, a processing speed that is 100 million times faster than that of average computer chips.

Google Director of Engineering Hartmut Neven said that what the D-Wave 2X can process in a span of a second is something that a single-core classical computer can solve in a span of 10,000 years.

Scientists teach machines to learn like humans

Computer learns like a human and (sort of) beat the Turing Test

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')img]http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/6wUV5JDL3FGYfzW6bpc.sQ--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3NfbGVnbztmaT1maWxsO2g9MTg3O3B5b2ZmPTA7cT03NTt3PTYwMA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en_us/News/ucomics.com/dt151210.gif[/img]

There is a fundamental difference between the way computers learn and the way humans learn. Humans can see one example and intuit what that object or symbol might be used for and quickly identify similar things. A computer can only arrive at the same conclusions after being fed thousands and thousands of examples. This usually referred to as "machine learning."

That may, however, be about to change.

Scientists at New York University have figured out a way to not only mimic how humans make those mental leaps, but to have computers recreate simple symbols and drawings in such a way that they're almost indistinguishable from these created by humans.

According to the study, “this approach can perform one-shot learning in classification tasks at human-level accuracy and fool most judges in visual Turing tests of its more creative abilities. For each visual Turing test, fewer than 25% of judges [the paper notes that there were 35] performed significantly better than chance.”

This machine-learning shortcut could have wide-reaching implications. It could shorten the time it takes for computers to learn new languages, recognize images and help systems generate new, usable designs based on existing designs, without human input.

The research could also have significant impact on future artificial intelligence innovation, including robotics. A robot that can make logical leaps about things might someday be more adept at human-like decision-making. Which is either a thrilling or terrifying thought.

Musk's Plan to Save the World From Advanced AI: Develop Advanced AI

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')img]http://l3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/mFCyrPlnurueINb_D2QIsA--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3NfbGVnbztmaT1maWxsO2g9MTg3O3B5b2ZmPTA7cT03NTt3PTYwMA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en_us/News/ucomics.com/dt151211.gif[/img]

Noted killer robot-fearer Elon Musk has a plan to save humanity from the looming robopocalypse: developing advanced artificial intelligence systems. You know, the exact technologies that could lead to the robopocalypse.

Yesterday, Tesla’s boss, along with a band of prominent tech executives including Linked in co-founder Reid Hoffman and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, announced the creation of OpenAI, a nonprofit devoted to “[advancing] digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return.”

The weird part is this justification for doing so: essentially, Musk and Altman seem to think kickstarting the open-AI revolution is the only way to save us from SkyNet. Here’s Altman’s response to a question about whether accelerating AI technology might empower people seeking to gain power or oppress others:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]... “Just like humans protect against Dr. Evil by the fact that most humans are good, and the collective force of humanity can contain the bad elements, we think its far more likely that many, many AIs, will work to stop the occasional bad actors than the idea that there is a single AI a billion times more powerful than anything else,” Altman said.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '.').. “If that one A.I. goes off the rails or if Dr. Evil gets that one A.I. and there is nothing to counteract it, then we’re really in a bad place.”

So, when the killer robots come—and make no mistake, they ARE COMING—Musk, Altman and their band of Avengers will all be able to fight back....with their own killer robots? If this sounds eerily reminiscent of the “a good guy with a gun would’ve stopped that bad guy with a gun” argument, that’s because it’s the same exact logic. Except, applied to a world where guns don’t even exist yet.

AI researchers develop 'Darwin,' a neuromorphic chip based on spiking neural networks

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'R')ecently, researchers from Zhejiang University and Hangzhou Dianzi University in Hangzhou, China successfully developed the Darwin Neural Processing Unit (NPU), a neuromorphic hardware co-processor based on spiking neural networks, fabricated by standard CMOS technology.

The Darwin NPU aims to provide hardware acceleration of intelligent algorithms for resource-constrained, low-power embedded devices. It has been fabricated through a standard 180nm CMOS process, supporting a maximum of 2048 neurons, more than 4 million synapses and 15 different possible synaptic delays. It is highly configurable, supporting reconfiguration of SNN topology and many parameters of neurons and synapses.

Its potential applications include intelligent hardware systems, robotics, brain-computer interfaces, and others. Since it uses spikes for information processing and transmission, similar to biological neural networks, it may be suitable for analysis and processing of biological spiking neural signals, and building brain-computer interface systems by interfacing with animal or human brains

The Pentagon is Nervous about Russian and Chinese Killer Robots

US Is Taking A Different Path In Robotic AI Arms Race

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')The U.S. is holding onto the human element in an international race to develop autonomous weapons.

During a Monday security forum, U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work said, “We know that China is already investing heavily in robotics and autonomy and the Russian Chief of General Staff [Valery Vasilevich] Gerasimov recently said that the Russian military is preparing to fight on a roboticized battlefield.”

Work also quoted Gerasimov as saying “In the near future, it is possible that a complete roboticized unit will be created capable of independently conducting military operations,” as reported by Defense One. Those prototypes, according to Russian defense firm Uralvgonzavod, could be ready in less than two years.

Platform-M & Argo systems deployed, and entered combat in Syria, and participated in taking an enemy position (a high tower or something like that).

I don't think they're truly autonomous though. But step by step. Self driving car... to self driving tank. facial recognition... object and terrain feature recognition. These are all SOFTWARE and parallel processing hardware implementations inside a device with plenty of power for cpus; all of which the Russians are absolutely our equal at. None of that requires stuff that we are better at. So you can be assured we could deploy these types of systems as well.

Musk's timeline may not be all that far off if something gets out of hand as it were.

OTOH, maybe the machines become smart enough to be patient and let us continue to build and design a complete infrastructure that can be automated, from resource extraction, to shipping, to construction and manufacturing, to delivery and deployment; and then only act if humans show a sign of directed hostility towards our new rulers.

Save me Neo!

The point I was trying to make is that they are full size, drive, and shoot without someone being inside...
thus the mention of the various parallel techs that are progressing with regard to autonomous driving, recognition, etc.

Air Force Confirms Matrix-like Electromagnetic Pulse Weapon

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')n The Matrix, all of Zion’s hovercraft carried devices capable of producing electromagnetic pulses. One blast was enough to disable any electrically-powered device within its blast radius, thus killing the feared Sentinels, the bad guys if you want. In the famous science fiction film written and directed by the Wachowski brothers, the EMP weapon was one of the most efficient means of defense against the machines used by the Resistance.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ') Air Force Research Laboratory commander Maj. Gen. Tom Masiello says CHAMP is "an operational system already in our tactical air force."

Boeing's "CHAMP," short for Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project is essentially the old nuclear electromagnetic pulse weapon that we used to worry so much about -- but without the nuclear part. CHAMP carries a small generator that emits microwaves to fry electronics with pinpoint accuracy. It targets not nations or cities but individual buildings, blacking out their electronics rather than blowing up physical targets (or people).

What makes CHAMP even more interesting is that, unlike a nuclear electromagnetic pulse weapon, which fires once, blacking out entire nation-states, CHAMP can fire multiple times, pinpointing and blacking out only essential targets. This would permit, for example, taking down radar defenses in a hostile state, while saving the electrical grid that supports the civilian population. In a 2012 test flight in Utah, a single CHAMP was reported to have blacked out seven separate targets in succession, in one single mission.

Human-machine superintelligence can solve the world's most dire problems

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ') The combination of human and computer intelligence might be just what we need to solve the "wicked" problems of the world, such as climate change and geopolitical conflict, say researchers from the Human Computation Institute (HCI) and Cornell University.

In an article published in the journal Science, the authors present a new vision of human computation (the science of crowd-powered systems), which pushes beyond traditional limits, and takes on hard problems that until recently have remained out of reach.

Humans surpass machines at many things, ranging from simple pattern recognition to creative abstraction. With the help of computers, these cognitive abilities can be effectively combined into multidimensional collaborative networks that achieve what traditional problem-solving cannot.

New human computation technologies can help. Recent techniques provide real-time access to crowd-based inputs, where individual contributions can be processed by a computer and sent to the next person for improvement or analysis of a different kind. This enables the construction of more flexible collaborative environments that can better address the most challenging issues.

Next Stop ...
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '.').. More than simply calculators, Mentats possess exceptional cognitive abilities of memory and perception that are the foundations for supra-logical hypothesizing. Mentats are able to sift large volumes of data and devise concise analyses in a process that goes far beyond logical deduction: Mentats cultivate "the naïve mind", the mind without preconception or prejudice, so as to extract essential patterns or logic from data and deliver useful conclusions with varying degrees of certainty.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')i]It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

The Mentat discipline is developed as a replacement for computerized calculation, just as the Bene Gesserit and the Spacing Guild take on functions previously performed by thinking machines.

They are not limited to formulating syllogisms; they are the supreme counselors of the Dune universe, as menial as an economist or a historian who might advise leadership, or as grand as advisor to the Emperor. So the Mentat is not a purely "left brain" type of intelligence with only a simplistic-autistic cognition, they are profoundly aware of nuance, subtlety and the kind of "sensitivity to initial conditions" which is studied in Chaos theory. Additionally, they take in information not only through visual media but from every other sense, as well, and their calculations are delivered not as numerical probabilities but as flowing paths, subject to new variations through the influence of new factors.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ') “We’re trying to build a distributed brain in which every neuron is a person or computer,” says Pietro Michelucci, Ph.D., director of Human Computation Institute (HCI), an organization collaborating with Cornell University on Alzheimer’s disease research.

An article in Science, “The power of crowds,” Dr. Michelucci’s team presents a system that looks beyond straightforward tech to take on complex problems in hopes of succeeding where traditional methods have failed. Many of these "wicked problems" are dynamic systems that remain mysterious and unpredictable—constantly changing events like weather patterns, political conflict, and pandemics—the understanding of which is beyond the capabilities of man or machine alone.

The human computation supercomputer uses machines to break down big picture data into pieces called microtasks, then reassembles those parts while human computation drives results—and large numbers of microtasking citizen scientists working together drives them fast.
The flexible, real-time environment processes data for integration, improvement, and reflow at exponentially faster rates than traditional methods, with humans and machines continually augmenting each other’s work.

“Imagine something like the game SimCity, but a thousand times more detailed, and then link in real-time sensors attached to the internet,” said Michelucci. “The more faithful that model of the real world becomes, the more accurate it would be for testing out solutions and predicting outcomes.”

Robot kills worker at Volkswagen plant in Germany

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')A robot has killed a contractor at one of Volkswagen’s production plants in Germany, the automaker has said.

The man died on Monday at the plant in Baunatal, about 100km (62 miles) north of Frankfurt, VW spokesman Heiko Hillwig said.

The 22-year-old was part of a team that was setting up the stationary robot when it grabbed and crushed him against a metal plate, Hillwig said.

He said initial conclusions indicate that human error was to blame, rather than a problem with the robot, which can be programmed to perform various tasks in the assembly process. He said it normally operates within a confined area at the plant, grabbing auto parts and manipulating them.

Another contractor was present when the incident occurred, but was not harmed, Hillwig said. He declined to give any more details about the case, citing an ongoing investigation.

German news agency DPA reported that prosecutors were considering whether to bring charges, and if so, against whom.

It just dawned on me. The implementation of this is so simple.

Simply have a back door into the self-driving cars to suddenly go into "kill all the humans" mode (Bender style). Since, according to Musk, self driving cars will be capable of being completely autonomous within 24 to 36 months, this should easily be achievable within the 5-10 year timeframe predicted. http://jalopnik.com/elon-musk-says-a-te ... 1752108176

I think Musk's main challenge will be getting cars to be able to get to all the places the remote humans are to finish the job. The ISS should be a real challenge, for example. (But Musk can do it! According to Tesla fanboys, he can do anything!
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

Sci-Fi time ...

Devil Car - a short story by science fiction author Roger Zelazny

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '.').. an interesting take on what would happen if automobiles were granted the ability to think, and act on their own.

Murdock and his sentient car, Jenny, have to track down the leader of a herd of wild cars gone bad. How bad? These sentient cars have been killing off their drivers with carbon monoxide so they are free to roam the canyons of the West, killing off pedestrians and stealing fuel. The devil car of the title, a black caddy, has eluded all attempts at capture so far - he's tricky, keeping a corpse in his driver's seat so he looks tame.

There's plenty of car-vs.-car action (Jenny is not only sentient, but well-armed), a tongue-in-cheek post-apocalyptic Old West feel, and some poignant moments as Jenny vacillates between her admiration for the Devil Car and her duty to serve her driver, Murdock. This story was probably one of the main inspirations for Steve Jackson's game Car Wars, which introduced the notion that "the right of way goes to the biggest guns."

or ...

"The Pedestrian" - a short story by science fiction author Ray Bradbury

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')n this story we encounter Leonard Mead, a citizen of a television-centered world in 2053.[notes 1] In the city, roads have fallen into decay. Mead enjoys walking through the city at night, something which no one else does. "In ten years of walking by night or day, for thousands of miles, he had never met another person walking, not one in all that time." On one of his usual walks he encounters a police car which is possibly robotic. It is the only police unit in a city of three million, since the purpose of law enforcement has disappeared with everyone watching TV at night.

Mead tells the car that he is a writer when asked about his profession, but the car does not understand, since no one buys books or magazines in the television-dominated society. The police car or its occupants struggle to understand why Mead would be out walking for no reason and so decides to take him to the Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies. He is forced to get in the car. As the car passes through his neighborhood, Leonard Mead in the locked confines of the backseat says, "That's my house". There is no reply.

OSHA - TYPICAL ACCIDENTS

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '-') A welding robot went functionally awry and its arm flung a worker against another machine.
- A worker removed the cover of an operating assembly robot to retrieve a fallen part and caught his hand in the robot's drive train.
- A worker attempted to retrieve a part needed in an ongoing assembly without shutting off an assembly robot's power supply. His hand was caught between the robot's arm and the unit being assembled.
- A robot's arm functioned erratically during a programming sequence and struck the operator.
- A fellow employee accidentally tripped the power switch while a maintenance worker was servicing an assembly robot. The robot's arm struck the maintenance worker's hand.
- An operator performing troubleshooting on a metal plater robot maneuvered the robot's arm into a stopped position. This triggered the robot's emergency stop mode which delayed venting of a pneumatic air storage device. When the return mode was activated, the robot's arm moved suddenly and jammed the operator's thumb against a structural member.
- An automatic welder robot operator made a manual adjustment without stopping the robot. He was hit in the head by one of the robot's moving parts when the next batch of weldments arrived.
- A materials handling robot operator entered a robot's work envelope during operations and was pinned between the back end of the robot and a safety pole.
- A worker attempted to remove an imperfectly formed piece from a conveyor with both hands while the operation limit switch of a material feed and removal robot remained in its active position. The worker's back was forced against the robot.
- After adjusting a metal shaving machine, an operator was caught between the machine and a just-extended arm of a material feed and removal robot.

This sort of thing has cropped up before, and it has always been due to human error.
