Doh,
I'm tempted to argue but I'll demur. I think it is close to religion we are discussing. You have a fundamental faith in humanity I don't share.

If I were able to convince you of my point I would only succeed in driving into my own level of depression. As an atheist I don't argue religion for the same reason.

Here's to hoping and praying you are right and I'm wrong.

It is hard to get more personal than what you eat, who you sleep with and what if any higher power you believe in. For many people they all evoke a response that borders on religious fervor. If you don't believe what they believe you are automatically either evil, or stupid, or both.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'V')egetables have been proven to cause cancer. In fact vegetable consumption causes more cancer than any other lifestyle factor in the world.
I’m not kidding. It’s a simple fact.

And it’s not just cancer, it’s heart disease too – in fact vegetables cause 1 in 5 deaths in the US, according to the American Cancer Society, or 480,000 early deaths per year.

Consuming vegetables causes orders of magnitude more deaths than consuming processed meat. This despite yesterday’s breathless headlines, after the WHO declared that eating processed meats (e.g. smoked meats) can increase the risk of colon cancer by a comparatively tiny 20%.

How vegetables can cause cancer
However – and this is crucial – vegetables will only kill you if you prepare them in a dangerous way. In it’s raw form the tobacco plant is completely benign, possibly even healthy to eat. But if you burn the tobacco vegetable and inhale the smoke… as with cigarettes… it’s VERY bad for you.

You know Dr. Ben Carson is a Seventh Day Adventist and has been a practicing Vegetarian his adult life. Seems like the Vegetarians should all be celebrating the idea of having one of their own as President.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')eventh-day Adventist Diet

Seventh-day Adventists are encouraged to eat a well-balanced vegetarian diet. They avoid meat but eat legumes, whole grains, nuts, fruits, and vegetables plus Dairy Products and Eggs. According to the Seventh-day Adventist website, “we believe God calls us to care for our bodies, treating them with the respect a divine creation deserves. Gluttony and excess, even of something good, can be detrimental to our health.” Some Seventh-day Adventists are lacto-ova vegetarians (meaning that they eat eggs and dairy foods) and others are vegans (meaning that they eat no animal products at all). The religion also discourages use of tobacco, alcohol, and other mind-altering substances.

Research findings

A multitude of clinical studies have used Seventh-day Adventists as the study population. These studies have proven that most Seventh-day Adventists are healthier than other populations. In general, Seventh-day Adventists have a lower rate of death, a lower rate of obesity, and a lower risk of developing heart disease, certain types of cancers, strokes, and diabetes.

A study of Seventh-day Adventists published in 2000 showed that the 34192 self-identified California Adventists who were followed for 12 years lived, on average, 7.3 extra years for men and 4.42 more years for women, when compared to other non-Hispanic Californians.

More good news for advocating a more vegetarian diet

http://www.bbc.com/news/health-34615621

ts report said 50g of processed meat a day - less than two slices of bacon - increased the chance of developing colorectal cancer by 18%.
Meanwhile, it said red meats were "probably carcinogenic" but there was limited evidence.
The WHO did stress that meat also had health benefits.
Cancer Research UK said this was a reason to cut down rather than give up red and processed meats.
And added that an occasional bacon sandwich would do little harm.
Patiently awaiting the pathogens. Our resiliency resembles an invasive weed. We are the Kudzu Ape

Probably best to go Mediterranean in diet.

Thought I join this thread. My daughter is going full vegan. She tried that before and became anemic. However, she is trying again and now does run cross country at school as well. Appears to be working for her, but I am very wary of a vegan that doesn't eat ALL vegetables.

I've been 90% vegetarian and 90% of that is vegan as well. I don't notice any problems. I no longer take supplements as well as multi-vitamins were bothering me.

However, my daughter's way out of the dilemma has been by ingesting vegan protein drinks. They taste good, too.

My wife refuses to give up meats and, especially, chicken. You can imagine what a big crisis every dinner must be for us.

Yes, EVERYTHING is bad in excess. Giving up one's sugar intake should be #1 for most.
Don't tell me I must give up my two (full) glasses of wine per day, but you're probably right.

It is foolish not to listen to what your body wants, but short term, all foods are addictive, so that is the challenge. Ignore your bodies wants in the time frame of hours or a few days, but listen to long term wants, that persist for days, for instance. The exception is water, of course, which is rather essential.
