I recently read a book by John Barnes titled "Mother of Storm". It is about super storms originating in the Pacific, caused by gigantic man-caused methane burps in the arctic.
Scary book, but the initiating cause (in the book) was kind of a stretch. But John Barnes is an excellent writer, in my opinion.
Anyway, just saw this article and it reminded me a lot of the early stages of the novel.

Hawk, since you like reading bout this sort of thing, I would recommend a book by Dr. James Hansen "Storms of my grandchildren". As you probably know Dr. Hansen is one of the foremost climatologists/Earth scientists. So his book must be very accurate and interesting.

Yeah, the finale was pretty anti-climatic on this one. Big build up and then the reality did not seem to match all the fear. Which is a good thing for the poor folks in Mexico.
Onlooker, I will check out the Hansen book. I have been a science fiction nut since I was 12 years old and it is kind of funny to see some of the fiction becoming reality.
One of the interesting things to me was that Barnes wrote the Mother of Storms book in 1995. He had pretty good vision to come up with the book that he did.

BTW, Hansen had a quick spot on the video below. It is one that I send to my friends that don't tend to believe in AGW, or even GW.
I always think they are more impressed with the logic of people who look and act like real scientists, rather than just another yahoo like myself.

Hawk, it might Be to early to say amticlimatic. Although I suspect the tourist places will do reasonably well I suspect slides and floods from the west to the east of that area may well cause great damage and significant life endangerment and that is just in Mexico. Texas is also looking down the barrel of really bad flooding.

Since 1880 we have warmed the planet by about 1 degree C. Every 1 degree C increase is good for at least another 7% more moisture in the atmosphere. The extra warm oceans provide extra energy for new 21st century storms and combined with the added moisture make for a destructive new normal. Until it gets even worse. Everything is anti climatic when you're sitting on your computer. Different story when you're the one getting hammered. These remnants are fuck all. Just wait til the next direct hit.

I'm originally from south Louisiana. Been hammered by a couple of hurricanes. Made good money as a kid in clean-up, and had to pay some kids to clean up when I got older.
Kind of fun until it gets above 80 mph.
All part of the game.
Even though Patricia was an extremely strong storm, she was also a fairly small one, and the stronger winds kept close to the eye, which was only about 6 miles across. It was still lucky that it hit where it did, and choose the path it followed afterwards.
I do believe storms will continue to get stronger and more frequent as we continue to warm.
I am still amused when people point to a year with few hurricanes, and say that proves the world is not getting warmer.

S. LA is not because of storms. Its because of our response to storms and flooding. The whole thing is naturally deposited sediments brought down with flood water; as we've channelled and pumped the flood water to make it not so much flood; we also removed the sediments that make up the land.

Thus natural sinking, with no replenishment = disappearing land.
