Kurzweil: All we need is (brain implanted, nanite enhanced) Love !

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'K')urzweil predicts that in the 2030s, human brains will be able to connect to the cloud, allowing us to send emails and photos directly to the brain and to back up our thoughts and memories. This will be possible, he says, via nanobots -- tiny robots from DNA strands -- swimming around in the capillaries of our brain. He sees the extension of our brain into predominantly nonbiological thinking as the next step in the evolution of humans -- just as learning to use tools was for our ancestors.

“We’re going to be funnier. We’re going to be sexier. We’re going to be better at expressing loving sentiment,” Kurzweil said at a recent discussion at Singularity University.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')owever, getting approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration would likely be very difficult, Friend told The WorldPost.

AI machine achieves IQ test score of young child

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')IT Technology Review poses the bigger question: to what extent do AI capabilities add up to the equivalent of human intelligence? Shedding some light on AI and humans, a team went ahead to subject an AI system to a standard IQ test given to humans.

Their paper describing their findings has been posted on arXiv. The team is from the University of Illinois at Chicago and an AI research group in Hungary. The AI system which they used is ConceptNet, an open-source project run by the MIT Common Sense Computing Initiative.

Results: It scored a WPPSI-III VIQ that is average for a four-year-old child, but below average for 5 to 7 year-olds

MIT Technology Review made the observation that, "Of course, there are various ways that the test could be improved."

Giving the computer natural language processing capabilities is one way. "That would reduce its reliance on the programming necessary to enter the questions and is something that is already becoming possible with online assistants such as Siri, Cortana, and Google Now," said the report.

MIT Technology Review added this to the bigger picture regarding this IQ study: "Taking Ohlsson and co's result at face value, it's taken 60 years of AI research to build a machine in 2012 that can come anywhere close to matching the common sense reasoning of a four-year old. But the nature of exponential improvements raises the prospect that the next six years might produce similarly dramatic improvements. So a question that we ought to be considering with urgency is: what kind of AI machine might we be grappling with in 2018?"

AI is not just about robots; it's about algorithms too ...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '.').. "Many choices that people consider their own are already determined by algorithms," argue Prof. Dirk Helbing and Dr. Evangelos Pournaras from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) in a commentary published in the latest edition of the science journal Nature.

Personalized information might make it possible to control our society in a top-down way, the article explains. China has recently started to introduce a "citizen score" - a single number which determines loans, jobs, and travel visa, depending on someone's behavior and web history, and on the behavior of their social contacts.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')hina’s Social Credit System (SCS) will come up with these ratings by linking up personal data held by banks, e-commerce sites and social media. The scores will serve not just to indicate an individual’s credit risk, but could be used by potential landlords, employers and even romantic partners to gauge an individual’s character.

“It isn’t just about financial creditworthiness,” says Rogier Creemers, who studies Chinese media policy and political change at the University of Oxford. “All that behaviour will be integrated into one comprehensive assessment of you as a person, which will then be used to make you eligible or ineligible for certain jobs, or social services.”

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]In addition to measuring your ability to pay, as in the United States, the scores serve as a measure of political compliance. Among the things that will hurt a citizen’s score are posting political opinions without prior permission, or posting information that the regime does not like, such as about the Tienanmen Square massacre that the government carried out to hold on to power, or the Shanghai stock market collapse.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]According to a planning document published by the China State Council last year, its objective is to improve "sincerity" in government affairs, commerce and social interactions.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')img]http://images.techhive.com/images/article/2015/10/sesame-credit-app-100620535-large.idge.jpg[/img]

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')amer? Strike. Bad-mouthed the government in comments on social media? Strike. Even if you don’t buy video games and you don’t post political comments online “without prior permission,” but any of your online friends do….strike. The strikes are actually more like dings, dings to your falling credit score that is.

Big data is sucking in everything about citizens as algorithms evaluate that data, but the Chinese government is leveraging that data and “smart data” analysis that “reveals even casual relationships” in order to create a comprehensive credit score system which “determines your opportunities for life.”

The new “social credit system” is linked to 1.3 billion Chinese citizens’ national ID cards, scoring them on their behavior and the “activities of friends in your social graph—the people you identify as friends on social media.” Citizens’ credit scores, or “Citizen Scores,” are affected by their own political opinions and the political opinions of their friends as well. The system leverages “all the tools of the information age—electronic purchasing data, social networks, algorithmic sorting—to construct the ultimate tool of social control,” according to Jay Stanley, Senior Policy Analyst for the ACLU Speech, Privacy & Technology Project.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Your score will be decremented for doing things like mentioning Tienanmen Square or speculating on official corruption, or for participating in activities that the state wishes to "nudge" you away from, like playing video-games.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')hristo Wilson, a computer scientist at Northeastern University in Boston, suggests that SCS may spawn a kind of black market in which people can pay for fake online profile details which will boost their scores, much like existing grey areas in which social network followers can be “bought” and Likes on posts can be paid for.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')reemers, who translated publicly released Chinese government documents detailing SCS into English, says the panic around his work is typical of Western media’s coverage of China. “Pretty much anything China does makes people panicked,” says Creemers. “And many times we don’t recognise that we are doing similar things.”

For starters, people in the West are often tracked just as relentlessly, but by corporations seeking profits. Of course, that doesn’t mean China’s intent to monitor and score its populace isn’t worrying.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]The ACLU said the credit rating system, an Orwellian nightmare, should serve as a warning to Americans.

Omg.. that "social credit score thing.."

Yikes. Orwell and the tech convergence, meet communism. 8O 8O 8O

It's such a burgeoning nightmare. I wonder if this will ever come to the West, one day. Facebook and google and now Microsoft with its new OS, already track every last little thing about someone right down to who they had lunch with yesterday at a diner (that people willingly post / tweet, about themselves).

So.. just plug all that.. into a "social credit score." And have it affect people's ability to get loans, or when you go for a job interview they pull your credit report *and* your "social credit report."

Right wingers and anti government types, tea partiers, they'd have a LOW social credit score. And it would affect their ability to get loans, or a job, or get a government job or gov grants.

Well gee, is he really in a hurry to be the first to have nanobots in his DNA uploading his thoughts to Facebook Corporation? 8O

Medical nanobots will be great, though.

This really is the future, folks.. everything that science fiction said would happen, is happening. Our species will evolve, become cybernetic. "Hive mind" with "the cloud," etc.

But then maybe it all goes horrible wrong and Orwellian and oppressive, because the communist party put in a "social credit score" and the cloud AI just reads people's minds.

And, with "the cloud hive mind," perhaps individuality and diversity ceases and maybe that's actually NOT good for the species.

Not the point. The process of total enslavement should be seamless, the results such a clear improvement over nefarious freedom to render such impotent. The main thing Christian paranoiacs got wrong is there is no need for chipping people or barcoding them. Our 16 megapixel face image & our internet tracking does it all. One last hurdle is the removal of cash, complete digitisation of the economy. When the sheeple start demanding this, Orwell's corpse will be mambo dancing.

Resistance is Futile! ...

Google wants to monitor your mental health. You should welcome it into your mind

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Google doesn’t just want to read your mind, it wants to fix it too.

It’s not alone. Apple, IBM and Intel are among technology companies exploring the same field. IBM this year carried out research with Columbia University that suggested computer analysis of speech patterns can more accurately predict the onset of psychosis than conventional tests involving blood samples or brain scans. Other researchers theorise that a person’s internet search history or even shopping habits (so handily recorded by your innocuous loyalty card) can identify the first signs of mental illness. Computers can now tell when something is about to go terribly wrong in someone’s mind.

... wearable technology allows continuous monitoring. A small portable device might monitor your tone of voice, speech patterns and physical movements, picking up the early signs of trouble. A device such as a mobile telephone.

If it's not clear watch THX-1138 ...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]SRT: How shall the new environment be programmed? It all happened so slowly that most men failed to realize that anything had happened at all.

Computer (medicine cabinet): If you feel you are not properly sedated, call 348-844 immediately. Failure to do so may result in prosecution for criminal drug evasion.

Chrome Robot: - Everything will be all right. You are in my hands. I am here to protect you. You have nowhere to go. You have nowhere to go

OMM: Let us be thankful we have commerce. Buy more. Buy more now. Buy. And be happy.

Don't resist. It will only make it hurt more.

Google will let artificial intelligence reply to your email

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ') Google is putting a different twist on the concept of "automated reply" with a new tool that aims to write artificially intelligent responses to your email.

The technology is part of an update to Google's Inbox app for managing and organizing email. The feature announced Tuesday is the latest example of Google's effort to teach machines how to take over some of the tasks typically handled by humans.

The most conspicuous example so far has been Google's 6-year-old project developing cars that can drive without a human steering the wheel. Google also has been using an artificial intelligence program called "RankBrain" to help determine the pecking order in its influential Internet search results.

In this instance, Google says it has created a program that identifies which incoming emails merit quick responses and then figures out the appropriate wording. Up to three choices will be offered as a reply before it's sent. The responses that people select are supposed to help Google's computers learn which ones work best.

Facebook wants to tap robot brains to do your bidding

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]... Sure, you could pay a human expert to examine a photo and answer those questions, but mustering an army of such organic brains wouldn't be cheap. "The beauty of AI systems is that we can get enough scale to deploy this to everyone on the planet," Mike Schroepfer, Facebook's chief technology officer, said in a briefing for reporters.

This sounds similar to the "wife mode" app I invented for dudes who are out with the guys and the wife keeps texting you. It would respond somewhat to the subject and then add a compliment or a "miss u" nicety. I think I should sue google for stealing my idea!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'W')ith an encyclopedic knowledge and computation accuracy far greater than a human brain, it would be no big deal for a computer to beat a human at such a straight forward task. However the robot will fail the personality test. It never made it to band practice...

Working in kitchen is going to be much easier in near future. Recently, scientists from the University of Maryland have developed a new robot, equipped with artificial intelligence, which can cook. The robot has the capability of leaning the procedures of cooking visually by watching videos on YouTube. Previously, scientists had developed robots which could recognize patterns and objects but this new robot which can interpret and act on the input is a unique creation. The project has been funded by DARPA’s (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Mathematics of Sensing, Exploitation and Execution (MSEE) program.

Unveiled today at Germany’s Hannover Messe technology fair, the machine consists of two remarkably dexterous robotic arms installed atop a cooking area, complete with hobs, a sink and an oven.

Rather than cooking like a machine, the system works by first recording human actions in 3D and then converting these into highly precise movements. The prototype was trained by chef Tim Anderson, who spent time whipping up original dishes in a motion-capture studio. During a demonstration, Anderson had the robot make a crab bisque, but he told BBC News it can do anything from a bit of prep to completing an entire dish.

High-tech Barbie stokes privacy fears

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]The new Barbie doll is "intelligent" and connected. The high-tech "Hello Barbie" doll unveiled earlier this year by toy giant Mattel and likely to be a holiday hit allows children to speak and get a response from their favorite toy.

But to make that happen, conversations travel over Wi-Fi networks to Internet "cloud" servers that use artificial intelligence to deliver a personal reply.

ToyTalk said it expects kids to warm to the new connected doll.
