American Jazz is the best music every developed. Mozart, Bach, glorious! But if you want want to hear the free improvisational musical mind at its best it happened in America. And it was developed by oppressed people who found their niche in the most vibrant country of modern times. It isn't any accident that America thought better of their oppression of blacks after the genious displayed in music. That's exacltly what the point was behind bebop. A display of dazling intelligence. They made their point with astonishing bravado and I can't get enough of it.

Well, I studied piano from age 6 to 18. Classical. I could play alot of Chopin at my best. Played in the jazz band in high school. But I haven't touched a piano now for about 12 years.

I listen to jazz most of the time but still like the classics. I bought all of Scriabin's works recently. I've been digging into Peter Bernstein's albums lately. He's probably the hottest club guitarist in New York right now. One of his best albums is "Heart's Content" which I reviewed it on Amazon. He's been playing with pianist Brad Mehldau for years, since they were both students. Mehldau is a young master. Every bit as good as Bill Evans.

Have you ever listened to the Dave Holland Quintet? Two good albums are "Not for Nothin'" and " Prime Directive". They do alot off unusual time signature pieces that sound so utterly original and fresh. Very cool. Seems like everybody who's anybody wants to play with Dave Holland.

I probably have heard Holand. My biggest impressions were made by the big rock'n'roll bands of the late 60's. Strong memories of me and Maria screwing to Led Zepellin. I saw Led Zepellin in the Sports Arena here in San Diego. Awsome. I once told a high school girl that I saw Led Zepellin in concert and she said 'I love you' There are a lot of kids who like The Doors. The 60's were interesting.

Yeah, well, I've just heard it so much that I can't enjoy it anymore. But I grew up on that rocknroll like everybody else. I thought Jimi Hendrix was the bomb for a while but started listening to jazz pretty much as soon as I got into High School. We played Stan Kenton pieces alot. Hank Levy.

Remember Fusion? Well, that was a fave of mine. Let's see, it was Bands like Brian Auger and the Oblivion Express, King Crimson, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Jeff Beck, Return to Forever, Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock & Headhunters... bunch of others I can't remember, now.

I know what you mean by that big band sound. Dave Holland has done at a few Big Band albums and they swing but it's fresh - it's not supposed to simply relive the old Glen Miller or Benny Goodman stuff, it's new. Dave Holland big Band I think is the name.

Good thing I can play saxophone, but I ain't no Charlie Parker. And besides, improvisation goes way beyond sheet music. But it's a start.

As for preserving it, well I think we were lucky enough to be able to have a century of recorded music. But music is ephemeral and the recordings will all crumble to dust. From what I understand, vinyl has a longer life than CDs.
