$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Newfie', 'H')ere in Philly, which is generally recognized as having some pretty good water, we had a turtle. I put in some feeder fish for times when we were away for extended periods. So one day when the water level was low, and I was changing out some old water, I put in some tap water. the feeder fish were dead in about five minutes.

I don't drink the tap water anymore, we run it through a filter and refrigerate it.

I'd guess Philly is now using chloramine instead of chlorine to treat the water as we do here in Ottawa. Chloramine is a blend of chlorine and ammonia and is a longer lasting disinfectant than chlorine alone. Pet fish owners need to use a dechlorinating agent (available from pet stores) if they are using tap water in their aquarium.

Yes, I get that about the fish being sensitive. I was lazy at that time. If in the wild you drink water from a stream lined with dead fish? Or would you take that as a warning sign?

It is a poison as it comes from the tap. 8O Need to let it set 24 hours before we drink it.

It may not kill us outright but it probably changes the biota in our gut and that may not be good.

Heads up, NOAA says this summer is looking worse than last summer.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '(')Toledo News Now) -

There were major developments Thursday over concerns about algal blooms in the western basin of Lake Erie. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its harmful algal bloom forecast and U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) is calling it "incredibly troubling."

Earlier algae predictions were made after a dry April and May but that has changed dramatically after historic rains in June. NOAA researchers now say the algal bloom will be more severe than in 2015 and you will notice it on certain days.

Dr. Rick Stumpf, oceanographer for NOAA, made the much-anticipated announcement Thursday morning at the Stone Lab. He predicted an algal bloom of 8.7 on a scale of 1 to 10. That is not as high as the “10” recorded in 2011, but is higher than last year's 6.5 severity level, when Toledo suffered its drinking water crisis.

“People will see, on calm days, larger areas of scum. On windy days they won't see too much of that. That will probably be one of the biggest visible impacts,” said Dr. Stumpf. "[There's] more biomass than last year. Not as bad as 2011, but could be the second worst bloom that we've seen."

He also says that does not mean there will be a greater chance for another water crisis like the one that poisoned drinking water in the Toledo area for more than two days last August. Stumpf says there are more monitors in the water now to see the algae as it grows and moves.

How are the Lake Erie zebra mussels? Although they are invasive, they dramatically increased the clarity of the water.

Oh they cleaned up the water alright, the problem is they did and do a lot of infrastructure damage that has become a recurring cost. They love water intake pipes of all sorts because the flowing water makes it easy to filter feed. As a result they form a crust an inch or more thick around the interior surface of intake pipes used by municipalities, industries, powerplants and on and on that require cleaning of all said pipes every 6-9 months to keep water flow up where it is supposed to be.

We occasionally get letters from the municipal water company explaining how pesticide levels accidentally went above allowed limits (it's very rural here) so we always drink bottled water. Not evian or anything like that, just cheap spring water that costs about 25 cents per litre.
What we think, we become.

You can see the bottom in some spots of Lake Michigan, that hasn't been seen for a hundred years, but yes they are clogging up everything.

I drink purified rainwater from off my roof. For over a decade… See the Rainwater Collection thread in PFTF.

The gold standard for drinking water.
There’s a strange irony related to this subject [oil and gas extraction] that the better you do the job at exploiting this oil and gas, the sooner it is gone.
