Desu, if you seriously have one year left, why not go back and finish your degree? What's the point of getting into debt for nothing?

Or did you flunk the previous year and this is all some elaborate existential angst designed to fool your parents into thinking you decided to quit rather than facing them with that reality?
What we think, we become.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('DesuMaiden', '
')Where is your proof that you need a college education to understand these texts? You can understand any non-technical book without a college education. The only books that might require a college education to understand are maybe some books on advanced math such as vector calculus. Just because a book is written by someone with a college education doesn't mean you need a college education to understand it.

I think you just answered your own question. And it's not just advanced math.

Like I mentioned, everything in life that actually matters can be learned on your own using the Internet and books. College is only necessary if you want to enter a white-collared profession that requires a degree like a doctor, teacher or a lawyer. The vast majority of jobs don't require a bachelor's degree, contrary to popular belief.

Your second sentence contradicts your first. Also, the irony is that many of those books, if not the Internet itself, involved college education to develop. And there are many professions that require degrees.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')
Like I mentioned already, there are too many people with university degrees. There aren't enough jobs that actually require a university degree for these people with university degrees. That's why over 60% of university graduates end up doing a job that absolutely does not require anymore education than a high school diploma if that. You have to remember the American Dream was not built by universities. It was built by hard-working blue-collared workers working in the manufacturing sector of the economy. Unfortunately, the USA is a shadow of its former self since most of its manufacturing industries have been outsourced to other countries specifically in Asia.

Only around 7 pct worldwide have college degrees. Most people can barely finish primary or secondary school. Another irony is that teachers in general require college degrees.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')
The most important jobs in society are the actually the ones that don't require any university education i.e. miners mining for gold, silver and other precious metals; drillers drilling for oil, natural gas and other commodities; farmers producing food; and factory workers producing goods that can be sold like computers, cars, and chairs.

Actually, large mining, manufacturing, and shipping organizations and systems involve people with college degrees. And even with a slow decline these will have to be maintained to meet basic needs.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')
University is a hype and scam. It doesn't produce a prosperous society. Only a handful of occupations actually require a university education like being a doctor, lawyer, teacher or engineer. And there are too many people applying for jobs that require university education. For example, there are too many lawyers and attorneys in the USA, because there are too many people with law degrees in the USA. This results in law school students having a very difficult time finding a job as a lawyer. What produces prosperity and wealth for a society is blue-collared jobs that require little formal education. While an education is important, most people do not need a university education. You are better off going to a community college and learning a practical skill and trade than going to university these days.

Actually, it did. That's why not only college but education in general is of a higher caliber in developed economies.

Watch this video to find out what jobs are actually in demand. Surprise! These jobs that are demand don't actually require a university degree!

The U.S. <> the world.

Somebody's got to do the dirty work. Not everyone can have a comfortable, high-paying white collared job in an office in a big city that requires a university degree. Dirty work like being a farmer, plumber, electrician, wielder, factor worker, slaughterhouse worker and etc need applicants, too.

Yes, but that doesn't counter my arguments in any way. Also, several of these jobs require more advanced training as one deals with more complex systems.

In short, everyone should know how to do blue collar work, as well as skills needed for sustainability. But if one has additional time, then learn more. That's where advanced training, if not a college education, comes in.

I went to university and got a degree
Then I got out went on the dole, saved some money, bought some tools and set up a construction business.(im very handy and learn quick)
I have made very little money from what I studied directly but without the education I probably wouldn't have been as "successful" (relative term) in my totally unrelated career choice.
But really I probably made more money flipping houses than I ever made "working" and that was more to do with good luck than good management.
Australia had free university then so it wasn't really a gamble just parked my bum and studied a little and passed,because I didnt want to just do a crap job.
It gave me time to think, find myself and opened my mind but so did lots of travel and an inquisitive mind.
Education is important,I had luck on my side because I certainly didnt put in lots of hard work.
Having cash flow to "gamble" helped so did a few housing booms.
Having a logical mind also helped.
The trick is to do what you think you have to, to give yourself the best chance of having a good life.
Education is a good thing.

I have done minimal formal education, no degree as yet, built 3 pretty good resumes in arts management, logistics & disability support program development. I always work for at least a couple of years in a general field before committing to study & specialize. I am able to easily average near $50k & have made over $100k in one of these professions, before qualifying.

ralfy - "Only around 7 pct worldwide have college degrees. Most people can barely finish primary or secondary school. Another irony is that teachers in general require college degrees." Might this be a good time to refer to the thread about the cause of income inequality. Obviously it's the result of all those college educated bastards stealing money from the less educated. LOL.

I earned the right to tease such folks: remember I'm the guy that couldn't recite the entire alphabet his freshman year in high school, got a BS in Earth Sciences from a third rate state university without borrowing a penny from anyone, then got an MS in geology from a better university and then got 40 years of on the job training. Yes: I don't have a great deal of sympathy for folks who don't make the effort to improve their skill set: either with college education or hands on "blue collar" education. As they say: water seeks its own level.

Can someone please lock this thread. My viewpoints have changed since making this thread. I don't believe college is a scam anymore. I believe college is worth it if you have the right goals when coming into college. Yes, you can go college, but only go college if you want to become a well-informed and intellectual person. Do not go college if you want to make a lot of money.

Desumaiden, if your views have changed and you acknowledge this why lock the thread. We need more examples of threads that start with one supposition and end with posters changing their minds or modifying their position. That shows that there is value in making a statement and learning from the responses of others.

I would much prefer to lock some of the threads where people only get more and more stubbornly stuck on their fixed position and then posters just start talking past one another.

Congratulations to Desu Maiden who started a thread, learned from the responses of others. studied the issue further and modified his position.

This is called learning.
