Matthew Simmons of Smiling Gator chats briefly about their upcoming post-apocalyptic MMO game.

The upcoming post-apocalyptic MMO game Twilight War from developer Smiling Gator…..

<snip for humour>
Gamecloud - The game takes place in a post-apocalypse setting, which has been used in a number of other games. Are you afraid of somehow repeating what others have done for this genre?

Matthew Simmons - Post-apocalyptic single-player games have been very successful, ….We think there’s a pent-up demand for a game like Twilight War .

Gamecloud - What are some of the more interesting gameplay aspects of Twilight War?

Matthew Simmons - There are going to be a lot, but we can only mention a few right now ;-) Twilight War will have more mature elements (drugs, sex, etc.) that will give it a different feel from other MMOs. The FPS combat will be modified by skills that players can improve over time, and jumping like a jack rabbit will yield you little—we want players to use real skills, not just be the fastest on the mouse button or space bar. Of course, there will be vehicles, mounts, and other modes of transportation. Also, the barter economy will be based on localized supply-and-demand; players will be able to have a real effect on values of items and goods in different parts of the game world.

See Matthew Simmons was only joshing you! Peak Oil is just an elaborate lead up for a computer game.

Ha ha ha fooled you!

Gamecloud interview

Is this bizarre, or zeitgeisty or what? I hope they model energy shortages in the game!!

A one-in-a-million coincidence. How did you manage to find that?

Googling around.

I was actually trying to find some reviews of Simmon's book because I thought there might be some attacks (criticism) on it by now, possibly from the Lynchoid crowd, and I thought I'd post them.

And it was just there in the list of results!

Wierd doesn't quite describe it, even down to the Twilight bit.

I'd never heard of either smiling Gator or Gamecloud- and figured this was a little much to just be a coincidence- but a little research reveals both are entirely legit.

From the Smiling Gator website:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')wilight War: After the Fall (ATF) is a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) with an integrated First Person Shooter (FPS) style combat system, where thousands of online players come together in an expansive and immersive three dimensional world.

This fooled me into thinking for minute that this game might be based on peak oil, but, going to the games official website reveals:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')wilight War is an Extreme Online Roleplaying Game (XORG) that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2296, two hundred years after the Doomsday War between mankind and alien invaders rendered much of the Earth uninhabitable and destroyed Human civilization.

Looks like nothing more then a strange coincidence...unless carlhole knows something I don't? :P

Battlefield 2 is the Peak Oil game - U.S, China and the 'Middle East Coalition' battle it out among the oil fields using planes, tanks, boats and infantry.

Run, do not walk, to the games store and buy it now!

I would be up for playing in a squad with other Peak Oilers if anyone else is a gamer round here.

I bet there's scads of them round here!

B2 sounds interesting, though I wouldn't be playing a Yank :)

However, I've been avoiding games recently as I have so much to do, and I get addicted too easily. I have refrained from buying Rome:Total War for that reson.
