Back last winter I read a letter in homepower about attaching foil to your fridge to make it stay cool longer. Since I had the insulating foil around here I figured why not and gave it a try.

So what I did was I covered the entire back of the fridge behind the coils with that shiny foil covered bubble wrap stuff. I then made a little cover over the compressor to direct the heat forward and notlet it up into the standard fiberglass insulation. I used large amounts of ducttape to hold it all together(obvious signs of a quality upgrade)

Right away I noticed that the compressor was kicking on less often, but never really had any way of knowing for sure if it was more efficient.

in my other post about measuing efficiency's around the house I mentioned that I had bought an energy meter and was testing. I've just completed 10 days of measurements on the fridge. The end result was 10.3 kwh used in 10 days. That works out to 370.8 kwh/year. Considering that this fridge is at least 5 years old and doesn't look like anything special in the first place that number is very good. That number is good for a new fridge.

So I'm recommending anyone that cares about their electric usage and isn't going to drop the big bucks on a sunfrost try this mod.

Interesting... Another important fridge tip is to get a brush and clean the thing behind the grille at the bottom on a regular basis. Dust build-up down there costs money and electricity.

Many modern refrigerators have sealed coils that never need cleaning. Mine does.
