Video from NASA langley:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A') way to explore Venus

NASA Langley researchers want to get a better idea about conditions on our nearest planetary neighbor, Venus, so they have come up with HAVOC or a High Altitude Venus Operational Concept – a lighter-than-air rocket ship that would help send two astronauts on a 30-day mission to explore the planet’s atmosphere. Exploration of Venus is a challenge not only because its smog-like sulfuric acid-laced atmosphere, but also its extremely hot surface temperature and extremely high air pressure on the surface.

This has actually already been done in the game kerbal space program. The venus equivalent in that game is "eve." There's a dirigible mod, similar to what you see in that nasa video. So people have already done that in the game, it's neat to see NASA coming out with this video a year later lol, "for real."

With that mod, you could do a complete mockup of this nasa mission.

Also covered in a Star Trek episode - The Cloud Minders.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he U.S.S. Enterprise comes to the planet Ardana to acquire zienite, a rare mineral needed to stop a planet-wide plague on Merak II. The zienite is not available, however, because the miner class Troglytes are rebelling against the rulers of Ardana, who live in the cloud-city of Stratos.

The Stratos-dwellers insist that the Troglytes are naturally inferior beings, but Kirk discovers that the Troglytes are being affected by a gas emitted during mining.

Unable to get both sides to settle their differences, Kirk traps the Troglyte leader Vanna and the High Advisor of Ardana's Ruling Council, Plasus, inside a mine. When the gas takes effect, Plasus realizes what is happening and promises to help the Troglytes. With peace restored, the U.S.S. Enterprise is able to secure the zienite it needs.

Rather than escaping the planet to avoid global warming it would be far more efficient to build an ark on this planet.

You could build a 'Fallout' style bunker on say Iceland (so you have geothermal power) and try and wait out the 300 years or so until global warming cools off a bit.

Pretty sure it wouldn't work for about a million reasons but far more likely to work than trying to leave the planet.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tanada', 'W')ell ESA has announced Venus Express ran out of fuel mid way through the orbit raising burns in November.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he mission then continued in a reduced science phase, as the closest
approach of the spacecraft to Venus steadily decreased again naturally
under gravity.

Under the assumption that there was some propellant still remaining, a
decision was taken to correct this natural decay with a new series of
raising manoeuvres during 23-30 November, in an attempt to prolong the
mission into 2015.

However, full contact with Venus Express was lost on 28 November. Since
then the telemetry and telecommand links had been partially re-established,
but they were very unstable and only limited information could be retrieved.

Without propellant, however, it is no longer possible to control the attitude
and orient Venus Express towards Earth to maintain communications. It
is also impossible to raise the altitude further, meaning that the spacecraft
will naturally sink deeper into the atmosphere over the coming weeks.

Gens Express has entered the atmosphere and any components that survived are strew across the surface below.
http://www.astrowatch.net/2015/02/rip-v ... eight.html

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')fter eight years in orbit and with propellant for its propulsion system running low, Venus Express was tasked in mid-2014 with a daring aerobraking campaign, during which it dipped progressively lower into the atmosphere on its closest approaches to the planet.

“This mission was essentially run flawlessly throughout its lifetime, and the only thing serious that happened to it was the lack of propellant to complete the raising of the orbit in November 2014, which led to the end of mission operations,” Martin said. “With just a little more fuel, the mission could obviously have gone further in 2015, but having been able to perform the aerobraking last Summer was really the ‘cherry on the cake’ for this mission.”

Svedhem admits that at a certain point and after doing some aerodrag experiments, the mission team was confronted with the possibility to do aerobraking operations to lower the orbit apocenter and thus reduce the effect of the sun which required frequent, highly consuming propellant maneuvers. It was finally decided to leave it as an experiment towards the end of the mission since the spacecraft was not fully designed to withstand the high temperatures caused by the friction with the atmosphere.

“The opportunity came finally in 2014 when the propellant estimation was predicting the end of its life. The aerobraking experiment provided not only a unique opportunity to explore the unknown atmosphere and altitude around 130 km but a European premiere to do aerobraking at a planet different from Earth,” Svedhem said.

Venus Express aerobraking operations were successfully executed from June 18 to July 11, 2014. After some internal discussions, the mission team and the ESA management had to make the choice between leaving the spacecraft go into the atmosphere or make a last maneuver attempt to raise the percenter with the propellant left and get a final bonus of science towards the end of 2014.

The spacecraft ran out of propellant and went to safe mode on Nov. 27. From that moment, it managed to get enough energy from the Sun to show that it was alive by sending a signal that has been detected by ESA and NASA ground stations. The last signal was detected on 18 January 2015. “We believe that the spacecraft is just about to enter into the atmosphere like a hero, holding its last breath down through its final atmosphere crossing,” Svedhem remarked.

Two weeks with no signal is pretty solid evidence she has gone where no human ever has, at least not yet.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to re-create Venus in secondworld and then define your avatar as being immune to deadly acidic gases. Problem solved!

Can't get the link to work, but I hope one of the finalists is the girl that says she deserves to go because she already has a helmet.

Try again. http://aplus.com/a/mars-one-if-i-die-documentary

It's strange. It's the same link. Let's see if it works. The video is interesting. All the candidates share a commonality of being in exile.

That link worked for me.

It's a very strange concept, a one-way ticket off the planet. I'm sure Mars One has made plans for this, but in 2024, how many finalists will be of child-bearing age, thus enabling colonization? Are they the first of many more, and are just going to get things ready for the rest to follow? I'm not sure if i would volunteer to go, or not. I suppose it all depends on whether or not there's oil up there. Or howlers.

The video was interesting because all of the candidates in their own unique way were somehow in exile in their lives here on planet earth. There is a psychological orientation that is predisposed to volunteering to take take such a one way leap. If they go and if they make it to Mars they will live the remainder of their days contemplating less their new world and more on what compelled them to leave earth and choose a monotone landscape void of life. They will be martian howlers as they look back on earth.

Well that's fascinating.. 8O

A star and its brown dwarf passed through the oort cloud. Well, okay then. Close call! 8O

That kind of thing can dislodge other orbits, in the oort cloud, and send one of those smashing to the earth. Basically -- the universe is a billiards table that just mostly calms down over time. But everything is in motion. Stars in this galaxy orbit the black hole in the middle. And galaxies are moving, too, and collide. And there's stars and wandering planets out there, too.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')img]http://cdn.phys.org/newman/gfx/news/2015/aclosecallof.jpg[/img]

A group of astronomers from the US, Europe, Chile and South Africa have determined that 70,000 years ago a recently discovered dim star is likely to have passed through the solar system's distant cloud of comets, the Oort Cloud. No other star is known to have ever approached our solar system this close - five times closer than the current closest star, Proxima Centauri.
