Do you watch TV?

Unread postby Schweinshaxe » Sun 26 Jun 2005, 10:21:53

About one year ago, my TV-set broke down. I was planning on buying a new one but didn't have the time. I went to the Internet for news or listened to American talk radio wich we can receive over the AFN network here in Germany. (MW, 873 kHz from Frankfurt, if you're living in Germany and are interested.)

During this short period I became aware of PO and the state of the global economy. I started to think a little about these issues and became more and more interested and aware.

I also discovered NPR and American talk radio. Now I can't live without "Talk of the Nation" and "All Things Considered". I sometimes even listen to Rush Limbaugh...

So, what am I trying to say here? Well, instead of watching Hollywood films dubbed to German interrupted by 15 minutes long commercial breaks, I have started to look a bit different on things. Feeling depressed? Buy a Rolex or a BMW! Max out your credit card and consume like crazy! Keep this insane system alive at any cost! No thanks! I'm not interested anymore!

I'm a well paid programmer waiting for my job to be offshored to Poland or India. I don't really care anymore because I hate my job. The thing is, a year ago, I worried a lot about losing my job. Now I'm almost looking forward to it since it would give me an opportunity to start a new life.

In Europe it doesn't really matter how much you make. The more you make, the more taxes and "fees" you have to pay. Therefore I wouldn't mind getting a lower paid, less stressful job that I really liked.

I don't watch TV anymore. I think instead. I'm dangerous to the system.

Can you also stop watching TV?

I don't watch tv for news anymore...there isn't any.

But let's face it...PO can be a depressing topic. TV can come in handy as a nice break from the seriousness of the real world. However i do find it a bit disturbing how most people have their lives wrapped around the tube and the 24 hour a day crap being fed into their brains.

ABSOLUTELY not.

Since graduate school, 1983, when I could barely afford a pot to p*ss in, I haven't had one of those stinkin attention grabbers in my house.

I hate TV.

I'm not a moralist. My LOATHING of TV has nothing to do with language, nudity, etc.

It's that TV COMMANDS your attention. It is the great tool of the "concensus trance" Kuntler talks about.

I listen to college radio, that's all.

And let me tell you something: this culture is so SATURATED with media crapola-lies that you can't get away from it, even when you don't have a TV.

I haven't watched TV in something like 8 years (including "9/11"). Except I occasionally tuned in during the US elections and for the Superbowl a couple of times - not very good reception without an antenna or cable. We watch rented movies on the TV now and then, though.

I didn't have tv for 5 years. I just got it hooked up again though so I could have the home improvement shows. I am interested in the do it yourself shows (of which there is one)

I can't really justify it but the kids also need it cause at school they keep getting asked about current events and get marked badly cause they don't know whats going on.

I may have to rethink this one.

My television viewing these days is limited to "Bob the Builder", "Dora the Explorer" and "Sesame Street", lol... all the rest is such BS. If I want to be distracted, I'll throw in a movie and pretend life isn't the way it is or will be, at least for a couple of hours.

Current events?

Here you go, this is my list of current events:

Famine
War
Energy crisis
Unemployment (now hitting the middle class)
Poverty (now hitting the middle class)
Preventable diseases killing millions
Government sponsored mass murder

Business as usual...

This is the list of current events from CNN:

Average teacher salary: $46,752
PC makers pass on Windows XP N
Discover Denver from 16th Street
Behind Smoltz, Braves sweep Orioles
Four suspects in Holloway case to stay in custody
Another filmmaker ate nothing but McDonald's -- and lost weight

Wow! You can live on Big Macs and still lose weight. Why didn't they tell me this earlier???

This is my list for your kids:

Cosmos 1 (privately sponsored solar sail space ship. Unfortunately a failure) -> www.planetary.org
The EU. Teach your kids something about the EU. -> http://europa.eu.int/index_en.htm
How does a battery, a nuclear plant, a submarine, a PC, a toilet, the Batmobile or a flower work? -> www.howstuffworks.com

Good luck!

I haven't watched TV for a couple of years, I don't have one. I stayed in a hotel night before last and there was a TV, and I didn't even turn it on, I read instead.

I do listen to the radio, right, left, all kinds of strange stuff, Air America is sucking less lately so I'm listening to that more lately, it's on right now.... Hey, a gas commercial! Let's sing along! "Let's drive to Valero....!" OK that's over now, hey, it's Bria Recreation!! You know, they rent Pleasureway Van Motorhomes!

The last "show" I watched was that one on the discovery channel about Yellowstone going TEOWAWKI on us. I wanted to watch that one about the oil crisis, but it sounded like a dud, (according to this board), so I have not even looked for a torrent of it. I get all my news and electrical entertainment via radio or internet now. It is a very rare occasion indeed when I turn on the idiot box. Television is a waste of my time. I would like to see you cook, clean, shoot, and work on your car while watching TV. Not going to happen. However, any action is possible when you are using the radio. I also rarely listen to music anymore. I am an AM Talk Radion addict :). Every waking moment of my day I have the radio on even if it is only a walkman. In 32 miniutes the Drudge Report is on!. KOZE is running reruns of Coast to Coast AM now.

Yes =

Sony 50" Grand WEGA High Definition LCD TV
Sony 7 Channel Home Theater Receiver
Sony DVD Recorder
Sony 400 Disc DVD/CD Player
Polk LSi7 Home Theater Speaker System
200+ Channels of Digital Cable

Yes, I feel cheated growing up with only a 25" color in the living room and 19" color TV’s in our bedrooms! My first personal TV was a 13” black & white but Santa Claus answered my request and brought a 19” color the next Christmas. Boy did those days suck compared with the lovely’s we have today.

I don't mind TV. I think aversion to TV is also a cultural marker for certain 'cool' segments of the population. Think 'Shoot your TV' bumper sticker crowd.

At the same time. It sure can be stupidifying, and can eat up as many hours as the friggin internet if you're not careful.

I do like spongebob and jimmy neutron, and timmy turner (how old do you think my kids are). And how are you going to watch the tour???!

Yikes.

The last person who said that to me was a guy chairing a meeting of the Socialist Workers Party.

There's always something educational or entertaining for everyone on TV. You just have to look for it.
