Of course everyone else might want to move here, and then we'll be overcrowded with others eking a living, but what's the difference?

What is so great about Maine?

Lobstahas, steamahas, cod , haddock, maple syrup, wood heated houses, potaoes, soldier beans, moose , deer, turkeys, neighbors that mind their own business but will lend a hand when you need one. etc.
Sort of like Vermont plus seafood and without Chittenden county.

Just everything I value dearly (except VT cheddar), and without 5 1/2 CT counties that are as annoying as Chittenden.

There's an old Newfie saying.
How do you tell the Newfies in Hevan? Their the ones who want to go home! :-D

It's kinda like Maine, but warmer.

I think any country that has a high population density and/or lacks in arable land will be a bad place to live when peak oil happens. An example of this would be Japan. Also, if a country relies heavily on food imports, they will be in serious trouble as oil supplies become limited because without sufficient oil, they will not receive any imports of food from other countries around the globe. You better become self-sufficient before oil supplies start to decline because if you realize this too late or acted too late, your chances of survival will be slim.

We have been over this so many times I have lost count. Being totally self sufficient is near to impossible for starters, when you really look at what claims to be so, it just isn't. Then, the closer you get to being so self sufficient, the more difficult it becomes to hid that fact. This is pre collapse. At an actual collapse, people suddenly become acutely resourceful, less ethical.

What I meant by self-sufficient is not being reliant on industrial agriculture for our food. I think that can be done...we can become self-sufficient in the sense that we eat food that is primarily grown locally when it becomes no longer possible to import food from thousands of miles away.

Thing is to be realistic. Somewhere here in the archives the maths has been done on farmers markets, as in the trendy ones popping up all over the civilised world as if there were something new in it. It turns out these tend to be massively inefficient compared to mass scale farming & distribution, due to economics of scale. Hundreds of cars running around delivering small amounts of produce, compared to trucks or better still trains & centralised distribution systems.

I think the consensus on this board is mostly split between the ideals of renewal of village scale economies based on minimal imports, & improved mass scale agriculture, cities & distribution systems. The 'one man island' or fully independent disconnected sustainable family home is largely myth & fantasy. Better to put your energy into a village or a city, use your wits & choose wisely, be prepared to work hard, perhaps for a bunch of carrots or a rabbit.

Best places to live with regard to all 3 fossil fuels in terminal decline:
Norway (99% hydro powered)
US Military Base - they will have enough of everything - one way or the other.

Maine isn't going to be all that hunky dory when it gets bad. It's pretty tough for a lot of people now. I think the best thing to do is to get some kind of land within your price range in a part of the state that isn't too far out there, but has fallen on hard times. Then replace the copper piping with pex and fix up the inside of the place, but don't do much to the outside. Get a woodstove that is airtight and insulate. Work on having an alternative source of water, a solar panel to run a few lights and a place to go to the bathroom if the grid goes out. Here's a possible bug out place:

This might meet some of your requirements.

I don't see solar, but could be added.

Canada will be a great place to live, but I'll bet they put up a border fence to keep people out. The general deterioration of everything on our side of the border will create lots of internal refugees, pressing up against the fence.

Do you think China would be a good place to live when the collapse happens?

So I guess it isn't really a good place to live when oil runs out. I guess China isn't really a good place to live when oil runs out...

There are already tens of millions of Chinese on the brink, wandering, looking for work, not finding it. But, Chinese have some advantages. Being used to working collectively. Having had serious deprivation in the not too distant past. Having survived famines many times throughout history. Having a one party system capable of implementing harsh political/ economic reform without having to worry about being kicked out at the next election.
