I would suggest that we need leaders like you to step up and run for office. Put a stop to this sort of thing and stand up for the common man and rights. Instead of whining about your rights being taken, run for political office and become a champion for the rights of your fellow citizens.

Or are you not a leader and just a guy on the internet who would rather whine all day and night about this type of stuff?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')"The city has carefully formulated an economic development that it believes will provide appreciable benefits to the community, including -- but by no means limited to -- new jobs and increased tax revenue," Justice John Paul Stevens wrote for the majority.

He was joined by Justice Anthony Kennedy, David H. Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer.

Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who has been a key swing vote on many cases before the court, issued a stinging dissent. She argued that cities should not have unlimited authority to uproot families, even if they are provided compensation, simply to accommodate wealthy developers.

She was joined in her opinion by Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, as well as Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas.

The left leaning judges voted for this. And the right leaning judges voted against this.

Moral of the story. VOTE REPUBLICAN !!! We need more judges like Scalia (Reagan), Thomas (Bush I), Rehnquest (Nixon) and O'Conner (Reagan) (all appointed by republican presidents) to stop this type of thing from happening.

Interesting that you have so-called leftist judges coming out for the greedy developers who want to bull-doze peoples' houses to put up ritzy commercial developements. The greedy developers are in cahoots with cruel greedy city officials. It seems clear enough that this isn't about 'civic good', its about the ability of powerful interests to run roughshod over the rights of ordinary citizens. Why? they (the judges) are looking down the road to a time when the larger government can run roughshod over the local powers and regular citizens alike in my opinion.

I suggest we make a list of Right that have been lost or weakened.

1) Bankruptsy - Rather than being able to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and make a difficult new start, families and individuals will be placed on long-term payment plans to credit card companies, companies that will take their houses, their cars, their child-support payments, and their paychecks.

2) Property - Local governments may seize people's homes and businesses -- even against their will -- for private economic development.

3) What else ...

States rights - the pot ruling... So even if something is legal in a state and doesn't involve interstate commerce, the federal law supercedes all state law? Man so much for the supremes protecting the constitution.

And this last one is just one more nail in the coffin.

Expansion of "Eminent Domain"

I think this relates to PO as PO relates to the economy.

Your so right GNM, They didn't hesitate any either.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '(')AP) Federal drug agents launched a wide-ranging crackdown on medical marijuana providers in northern California, raiding pot clubs, homes and businesses in San Francisco and arresting a husband and wife in Sacramento.

Officials with the Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. attorney's office would not say how many people were arrested or give other details, pending a news conference Thursday.

This isn't really an issue of "left" or "right," it's one more symbol of a growing corporate-government State that is putting profits above individual rights and the U.S. Constitution.

good one gnm.
we're gettin' screwed from left and right. Kerry voted in favor of the Bankruptcy bill, even before he could vote against it.
And even Obama, which completely blew my mind.
Politics in America is like the WWF, they give us our choice of good and bad guys, godless hippie libs VS greedy heartless conservatives, we get to root for but regardless of how many clever signs and chants, the match is fixed and the Big Money always wins.

Know I can't even stop the government from keeping a database on my underage children. :-x

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he Defense Department began working yesterday with a private marketing firm to create a database of high school students ages 16 to 18 and all college students to help the military identify potential recruits in a time of dwindling enlistment in some branches.

The program is provoking a furor among privacy advocates. The new database will include personal information including birth dates, Social Security numbers, e-mail addresses, grade-point averages, ethnicity and what subjects the students are studying.

you guys are so screwed.

during the 70s there were riots for lesser issues that what's brewing these days.

btw, this is not the first time private property was confiscated for a coperation under eniment domain. You're government has been doing this for over 10 years already (that I know of).

at what point will you people start standing up for you're rights.

With the "good justices" tending to vote for the measure, and the "evil justices" voting against it, I'm not quite sure what to make of this.

Perhaps this outcome is important not so much because it has the potential to screw property owners in favor of the wealthy and powerful, but more because it lets locales better address a need to construct intra-urban railway systems or other such publicly-beneficial projects. So I'm waiting before I choose a side.
