$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('vision-master', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('buddylee', 'S')o chemicals leach out of the plastic bottles into the water and that's not safe of course. Or your other option is to get a filter system for your tap, but of course they don't help against flouridated water... which, if you've researched flouride you'd see how terrible that stuff is.
Which is the better choice?
Find a good spring for your water source.
Maybe I should bottle the water from our two springs, LOL.

For those who missed me today (ha) the Toledo, Ohio water treatment plant issued a no consumption statement before 6 am for their 500,000 customers due to Microsystin contamination of the supply at the treatment plant. Aparently the carbon filtration units are ineffective at removing this liver damaging byproduct of algal blooms like the one just off shore in Lake Erie where the treatment plant draws its water.
Panic ensued, shelves were cleared of bottled water by 11 AM.
Fortunately my suburb gets its water from a different source point and is unaffected so far.
Whoops forgot the money quote,
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')overnor John Kasich has issued a state of emergency for Lucas County and surrounding communities due to algae toxins detected in the water during routine testing.
Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins says further test results on Toledo's water conducted in Cincinnati are expected to be ready by 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and that more tests are also being run in labs in Columbus. He said there would three independent tests available to assess the health of the water.
He also said National Guard trucks were on their way to Toledo with water and that would be distributed at Waite High School and Central Catholic High School. Collins said pre-mixed formula and MRE rations were also enroute. The mayor said stores in suburban locations are restocking shelves with water.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('dolanbaker', 'W')e've been living with a "boil water" notice here for the past 9 months while the water treatment system is rebuilt!
Every now and then someone forgets and gets a dose of the squirts!
We get occasional boil water orders when a water line breaks, but Microsystin is concentrated by water boiling so for the home consumer it just makes the toxin worse. Microsystin is a break down product of the algae, a chemical contaminant not the living organism itself.

How do you filter it, or do you just avoid the water.

The news is telling everyone to stick to bottled products or get drinking water from neighboring communities. If you are healthy they recommend short showers and avoiding contact with your eyes or mouth. This morning they recommend that anyone doing laundry turn off their hot water cycles and just use cold water, and if you get a rash take your laundry to a neighboring community laundromat and rewash it. The hospitals effected are using bottled water for regular patient care and for dialysis patients water treated by reverse osmosis followed by multiple carbon filters.
This place is a mess, and the panic buying clearing store shelves certainly didn't help. Tim Horton's restaurant chain in Toledo is open because the parent company shipped local franchises bottled water from Michigan for brewing coffee, making soup and doing dishes. They had to prove to the health inspectors they were using all bottled water for customers before they were allowed to reopen. Small private restaurants are all closed.
Like I said, its a real mess. If this were a real disaster only the helpful nature of the neighboring communities would have saved people. Prevailing winds normally keep any algae blooms away from the water intakes but for the last few days the wind has been calm or blowing towards the shore so the algae has accumulated thick and deadly around the port of Toledo where the water intakes are located. Forecasts on TV are saying it will be 36 hours until normal wind patterns return and the reporters are saying even after that it could take a few days for the water to clear.

News conference just concluded,
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')oledo Mayor D. Michael Collins said in a Sunday morning press briefing that the latest results show improvement, but the ban on drinking water continues. Additional test results are expected sometime Sunday. He says a water sample was flown to Cincinnati for further testing.
Lucas County Health Commissioner Grossman says there have been no severe illnesses related to the toxins so far.

The news just reported that Federal Law requires hospitals to maintain a 96 hour stockpile of food and water so that they can operate uninterrupted without resupply in an emergency. I can tell you that yesterday four of the five Toledo area hospitals were getting supplies of bottled water shipped in specifically because they did not have it on hand when they needed it. Ill people are at much greater risk from Microsystin, especially immunocompromised patients, liver patients and kidney patients.
I wonder more and more how our culture in current America will handle a real emergency if a water restriction highlights so many faux-pas.
The news also reports that around 60 people went to emergency rooms yesterday complaining of symptoms of Microsystin poisoning, all were treated with hydration and sent home.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')oledo Mayor D. Michael Collins says the United States EPA has requested multiple samples since the initial positive tests. Results of those tests are not expected until Sunday afternoon a, but Collins says "everything is trending in a positive direction."
Ohio Governor John Kasich was in Toledo Sunday afternoon to meet with Collins and other area leaders.
The health department says it is critical that residents know the following:
1. It is safe for healthy adults to bathe, wash their hands, and shower. While bathing, children should be under the supervision of an adult to prevent accidental drinking of the water.
2. Do not drink tap water until the all clear is given, this also includes pets.
3. Do not use tap water to cook until the all clear is given.
4. Do not boil tap water.
5. It is ok to use and flush your toilet.
