I thought this was interesting.
The Oiling of America by Mary Enig (google it)

Subject: FW: BUTTER vs. MARGARINE
Another Margarine tidbit:
It was originally used to fatten up turkeys. Then the turkeys began dying. So margarine was marketed to people as a substitute for butter.
yum!

Do you know the difference between margarine and butter?
a.. Both have the same amount of calories.
b.. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.
c.. Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
d.. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
e.. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few onlybecause they are added!
f.. Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
g... Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine .......
a... Very high in trans fatty acids...
b.. Triple risk of coronary heart disease..
c.. Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol)
d.. Lowers HDL cholesterol,(the good cholesterol) e.. Increases the risk of cancers by up to five fold.
f.. Lowers quality of breast milk. g.. Decreases immune response...
h.. Decreases insulin response. And here is the most disturbing fact....

HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance)..

YOU can try this yourself: purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) .

it does not rot or smell differently..because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it...even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast? Share This With Your Friends.....(Butter them up.)

Speaking of NutraSweet...

The day I found out that it's an effective fire ant killer was the day I quit using it.

I have a friend who works for a food testing company, and he says that microorganisms and bugs do indeed grow in and eat margarine.

Margarine is nasty stuff. It tastes icky and can promote worse disease states than butter. The coloric content is very similer so don't think it's a good "diet food". The main problem with butter is the high cholesterol content, but it has nutritive value including natural vitamin content including B12 for you vegetarians..

Margarine is derived from plant material and has no cholesterol. It was touted as being a healthy alternative to butter. Later studies found that the hydrogenated fat in margarine can promote cancer and other afflictions that butter does not contribute to. I apologize for being too lazy to attach appropriate links.

Butter is tasty and the detrimental effects of the cholesterol content can be reduced when mixed with olive, grape, canolla oil etc.

I'm sure there are others who can contribute more to this discussion.

I love butter, but use it in combination with other oils and reduced red meat consumption.

The one thing that bothers me about butter is that it is one repository for the fat soluble stuff like POPs, dioxin, and PCBs. Other than that I think butter, ice cream, cheese, and the like is great.

Check out:

When I get to this point I am reminded of the anime classic Nausicaa by Hayao Miyazaki where the earth itself is polluted. I am also struck by the need to get far better legislators that those corporate whores we have now.

I heartily agree. More the reason to try to use organic products from known, local sources.

I agree but don't know how to get rid of the vermin. They feed from our blood and stomp us into the mud in return. (Maybe I'm having a bad few years)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')peaking of NutraSweet...

is it acesulfame-potassium (sp)? like aspartame? how do you use it? put it in water and spray it around or leave a line of it around the house?

I imagine if it will work on fire ants it will work on regular black ants too?

When I follow what I call the "meaty-herby" diet, lots of red meat and lots of herbaceous veggies, like "field greens", lot of fresh basil cooked with the meat, etc I notice um, my movements are very regular, effortless, and well, my shit don't stink. Based on that evidence, if I had to guess what my system is designed to run on......

I think the paleo-diet folks have got some very good points and it's worth studying that type of diet. I think they go off the deep end when they say raw-only, since humans have been cooking for something like a million years, we've been the "fire ape" that long. But we evolved on stuff that's been around for millions, not thousands, of years and that means we probably run best on a pre-farming, healthy-land hunter-gatherer diet.

NutraSweet killing fire ants is fascinating ... now I want to find some fire ants to try it on! Fire ants are a major problem in much of the US, and you can get NutraSweet everywhere. People actually get killed by fire ants, they're no joke. It's worth putting up a web page, simply to show people how to kill off their fire ants, preferably with pictures and video if you can do it.
