UK peak oil site under hacker attack! ooer

Unread postby KevO » Sun 19 Jun 2005, 10:26:18

Is peak oil.com safe from this sort of thing?
One day peak oilers get blamed for record oil prices, the next the UK's main peak oil forums go down.
Coincidence?
Definitely Maybe

The PowerSwitch Forum is under going maintenance as a consequence of a hacker attack.

A low-risk trojan virus may have been picked up by any user who entered the PowerSwitch forums from Friday 16th June.

You can run an online virus scan from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
You can download free anti-virus software from www.grisoft.com
Mcafee offer a 15 day free trial of their anti-virus software at http://download.mcafee.com/us/eval/evaluate2.asp
We recommend you use anti-spyware software too. Try Spybot which can be found at http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-D ... 22137.html
Users of the Firefox browser were, as far as we can tell, not affected. You can download Firefox from www.firefox.com
We aim to have the forums up and running on Sunday. We hope to be able to restore all the data.

Hackers... hack. (That sounded trite).

But they do... almost everybody gets hacked on occasion.

There is a large international "hacking" community, who share ideas and techniques, and sometimes ideology. This is a large & growing kind of social movement, fueled by a simple development...

For information systems, (including the Internet & every other software based system), an individual can be "smart enough", to transcend any barriers to advancing. Because it's anonymous, outside factors like age, race, heritage etc... don't matter. It's just how "smart" you are... that's it.

Absent some radical new development in security technology, we should expect this condition to prevail for the foreseeable future.

We have been hacked on more than one occasion, but without malicious consequences. These likely are not professional criminals, but really smart people who did it because they can.

Having had some brief contact with members, or at least knowledgeable insiders, of this community, I am pleased to report that among the folks I have corresponded with, PO.com is considered one of the "good guys", because we promote education which questions conventional wisdom.

Hopefully, this perception is a trend.

And to all the kick-ass hackers out there, thanks for the pass. We are mostly just regular old computer type people in here trying to do our part, and freaking out a little over what appears to be a major freakin issue.

:)

And in the immortal words of Homer J...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'J')esus, Allah, Buddha - I love you all!
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.
