I'm no chemist so perhaps this will help someone else get a handle on what I hold as a valid concept.
We Backpackers are in aconstant search for lighter and simpler equiment. Reading up on long distance 'trekking; I learned acohol fueled stoves are are popular in many parts of world. They are lo-tech and easy to construct. Experimenting with boiling times, I experienced the real world differences between petroleum fuels and other fuel(i.e. alcohol).
Both support combustion.
both will toast yourt fingers.
Acohol didn' t boil my pot of water anywhere near as fast as gasoline fuels.
So I had to use alot more liquid alcohol to boil the same quantity of water.
Stop/Drop and roll works. 8O

So from practical experience, you're saying that 1kg of alcohol heats water less than 1kg of gasoline? I'm sure someone here will know if what you suspect to be true, is true. I didn't realise that the two don't give similar heat energy out when burned. I assumed they did.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'y')ou're saying that 1kg of alcohol heats water less than 1kg of gasoline

That's correct. Gasoline (LHV) has 32 MJ/liter, while ethanol (alcohol) has 21 MJ/liter. That's why ethanol cars don't get the mileage of gasoline cars.

Diesel has 36.4 MJ/liter and biodiesel 33-35 MJ/liter (it's not a standard product).
