Colonizing a planet

What's on your mind?
General interest discussions, not necessarily related to depletion.

That remind me a famous movie of 1996.. Independance Day. Fantastic movie in unintentional 3rd degree humour. One famous quote was from the president of USA, who received a telepathic message from a captured Alien:

"I saw... its thoughts. I saw what they're planning to do. They're like locusts. They're moving from planet to planet... their whole civilization. After they've consumed every natural resource they move on... and we're next. Nuke 'em. Let's nuke the bastards. *

Anyway, thinking about colonizing other worlds, I just wonder if it could be possible to ship "base life ingredients" on other planets, and hope that enventually, it will produce life.. maybe transmit some kind of genetical programming code in these ingredients, controlling the evolution.

Probably a good "sci-fi" idea, but not practical.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('tita', 'A')nyway, thinking about colonizing other worlds, I just wonder if it could be possible to ship "base life ingredients" on other planets, and hope that enventually, it will produce life.. maybe transmit some kind of genetical programming code in these ingredients, controlling the evolution.

I know more about sheep dips than evolution- literally- but isn't evolution a rather drawn out, unpredictable way of doing things? Isn't it what chaos theorists call a non-linear equation (ie. impossible to predict)? Wouldn't simple mutation do the job just as well?

Cool idea though. Shame all genes seem interested in is copying themselves (kind of like Uni students  )
There'll be war, there'll be peace
But one day all things shall cease
All the iron turned to rust
All the proud men turned to dust
So all things time will mend
So this song will end
