I lived like that in a few variations for over a decade, took no photos, made no publicity- just did it. Since then the government in most states in Australia has made living afloat illegal! As if I care if it's illegal. I'm in the process now of building another home made houseboat from an old caravan (trailer home yanks call them?). Very shallow draft boats are in my experience very able to get away from prying eyes and authorities- which tend to be inherently lazy. In my years afloat I spent less on docking than Newfie spends in a week. I never had a fine, a prosecution of any sort. In most places I never suffered a theft or even saw anyone other than a few canoeists a year.

Yup, can be done in the right place.

Round here though there are no moorings or other places to anchor out.

In part because of the river and currents and in part because of the industrial nature of the area.

VERY few live aboards, heat is a big issue and most all live aboards use some shore power. We have done it without, to prove to ourselves we can do it. But we have two heaters on the boat. Dock mates just put in a wood stove.

But yes, folks do it.

Most river systems in Australia have major estuaries with mangroves galore- makes getting beyond the reach of lazies easy :) . Canoe folks never seem to have a problem with this lifestyle as long as things are kept clean, poo and rubbish taken out. The only problems I ever encountered were from coming too close to people who have paid a lot of money for a waterfront view one way or another- often these will report the instant they see anything they don't like- a sure sign that money doesn't buy happiness...
