$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('katkinkate', 'W')asn't that why the US constitution was written the way it was, with all the amendments and bill of rights, to limit the power of the government, provide checks and balances, to prevent those in power using their power against the people?

Yes, but the (American) people who would have rather been maimed by the Gooks, tortured by the Japs, locked up by the Krauts, bayonetted by the Zipper Heads, or nuked by the Red Ruskies have long since stopped running the country. What we have in power now are those people who will sacrifice any and all freedoms to maintain "peace and prosperity" at home. I would say that this started with Hoover's New Deal.

Hoover's administration attacked State's Rights and individuality. Truman's assault was against State's rights, I can't think of anything Ike did. Kennedy assaulted against the gold/silver standard of currency, as well as state rights, and the free marked via his executive orders. Some of the orders that he signed effectively repeal the thirteenth amendment during a national crisis. Johnson's assault was against the moralty of the nation, as well as personal responsiblity. Nixon's assault was against state's rights. Mr. Peanut's assault was against the family stucture, and state's rights. Regan's assault was against personal enjoyment through recreational use of psychoactive substances, Clinton's assault was against the familial structure, the meaning of "is" and sex, and the right of personal defense, Bush's assault is against the fourth amenedment, and sections of the first amendment.

Given the track record, I can say for certian that the new president in 2008 will move to restrict freedoms and responsibllities more. Just predicting from previous patterns, I would say that the new president will attack the RKBA, traditional values, and state's rights. Not only have we been on the slippery slope for quite a while, but the lubricant just changed from motor oil to Teflon. The Bush administration coated the mountian side with Teflon, the next president will surly give this nation a hefty push to get us closer to the cliff even faster. The president after that will just shove us over the edge. I say we have a maximum of 16 years before we as a nation have absolutly no freedoms at all, and very few privilages.

I just hope that it dosen't get to how my dream was last night where dissent was made punishable by 20 years in a maximum security penatentary. I don't renember much beyond this dream other than CNN was saying that is was "one step better" than the old patriot act, and they said it would greatly help in the fight against domestic terrorism. I renember this bill started with an "A", and it was called by an acronym that really wasn't a word in the first place. I renember in the dream accounting for my ammunition and wondering how to start the new war.

EDIT: Uh-Oh!, Here We Go!
