WA Rep. Cathy McMorris (R), Supports The Second Amendment!

Unread postby k_semler » Wed 08 Jun 2005, 20:31:01

About a month ago, I found out about H.R. 1703, and I wrote my representative to urge her support for this bill. According to the email I received today, she must! There may be hope for this nation yet! She ABSOLUTELY has my vote the next time she is up for re-election!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Cathy McMorris', 'D')ear Kurt:

Thank you for contacting my office regarding H.R. 1703 the Second Amendment Protection Act of 2005. I appreciate hearing from you.

H.R. 1703 was introduced by Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) on April 19, 2005 and referred to the House Judiciary Committee. The Second Amendment Protection Act of 2005 repeals the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act and restores and revives any provisions they amended as if the repealed Acts had not been enacted.

Without a doubt, we need to preserve the Second Amendment and protect our citizen's rights to have guns for lawful purposes, including hunting, self-defense, collecting, and competitive or recreational shooting.

In August of 2001, the FBI published a list of factors that contribute to crime based on the Uniform Crime Report. Access to firearms did not make this list. Gun control laws are not the answer to reducing crime. The focus should be on increasing penalties for crimes committed with guns. Your comments have been well noted and rest assured I will continue to work hard to protect the rights put forth in the Second Amendment.

Thanks again for writing. Please do not hesitate to contact my office if I can be of further assistance.

Best Wishes,

Cathy McMorris
Member of Congress

Maybe I'm missing something, but... why does the 2nd Amendment need "protection" in the form of additional legislation? Wouldn't it be sufficient and more appropriate to simply challenge the existing laws which the new legislation is trying to repeal within the SCOTUS?

After all, if the existing laws are unconstitutional with respect to the 2nd amendment, wouldn't SCOTUS take care of the problem by default? Why is additional legislation needed for this?

There should be no need for this country to make end runs around its own governmental structure.

The reason for the need for additional legislation can be found in the circulars ATF P 5300.11, ATF P5300.4, and ATF P 5300.5. According to my bathroom scale, the nation's firearm laws weigh in at 5.251 LBS. That is about 2,381.8135 grams too much weight. I agree with you that there should be no need for this law, but the situation is what it is, and it is highly doubtful that will get better without either passing laws to neuter existing unconstitutional laws, or the picking up of arms. Peaceful resolutions to the biulding anarchy are becoming less possible. Soon, there will only be one option, there might as well already be one option left. The question is, are the people willing?

If possible, check their voting record. They will always blow smoke up your ass when they write you, their voting record tells you how they really feel.

GovTrack.us says she has voted "Yea" on every bill introduced to the 109th US Congress. Given this record, she probably will vote for H.R. 1703. :) (Yes, she also voted for the Real ID Act). :shock: The bad news is, she will probably vote for infinite extention of the US PATRIOT Act. :(
