$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Repent', '
')The best solution would be that no one goes into the fallout shelter, because the survivors of a total world wide nuclear war would end up envying the dead.

Basically you told her that life without modern amenities is not worth living.

Given the responces on this board, I have admitted to her that:

1) I was wrong
2) I am not sufficiently knowledgable about nuclear fallout to make an informed decision.
and
3) I insisted that she approach her teacher and ask for permission to redo the assignment.

It takes a lot of character to change one's position with regard to their kids, Salute!

And to change ones mind on a message board is even more unique, Double Salute!

I'll take it down if you really want but I think it is a great example of what boards are actually good for..
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

All egos aside, this thread is a very concise summary of an important topic, taking it down means the subject goes back to the void, rather than the vault (index).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Repent', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')If not, it just looks like a kid trying to avoid writing more than a sentence or two. (a certain child of mine is famous for such antics, grrr!)....

Agent R- I hadn't thought of that? That my daughter used what I told her as an excuse not to properly present the reasons I gave her to her class, to only write a sentence or two?

I'll have a word with her now!

I'd be interested to know the results of that. If she put in a "reasonable" effort, then the "F" was for not CONFORMING -- not for content. Sadly, our primary educational system seems to have become far more about "getting along" (i.e. conforming) than learning the three r's to some objective standard, and learning to THINK. (I think our troubles have as much to do with a lack of morals as with peak oil, as umpopular as that view may be).

Being able to work in teams and work with others is important -- but this doesn't SOUND like what the assignment was about. If the core was about ethics (stated explicitly or implied) and your daughter gave thoughtful answers backed up by reasons (right or wrong) she did NOT deserve an F, much less a zero!

And if she admitted she talked to her father about it -- so what, as long as she did the writing herself. (I recall multiple times where basically no one in class could do the math homework. Sometimes I would come in having managed to do it. When the teacher asked how I managed it, I would cheerfully admit I didn't understand AT ALL WHAT WAS GOING ON, so I asked my father to help me. We worked together until I got the "joke", and then I could continue).

I recall being kidded a bit about it or the teacher sighing and saying "his father did it for him" like it was a poem, but I NEVER recall being "beaten up" for at least making the EFFORT to get the work done!
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.
