Apologies to Don McLean

A long long time ago
The blooms all died
and laid aside
the Mesozoic Shine
now we draw it down
and hear the sound
of screeching as we run a-ground
and come at last to rue the day
we ever started out this way
and hit the final end of the line

Now February makes us shiver
There's still more bad news to deliver
Evil tidings at the doorstep
But we must still take one more step

There's nowhere now to run and hide
This slick tech world is truth denied
And I can't say that I ever cried
The Day The Oil Fields Died

So bye bye big American pie
Can't drive no Chevy to the levy
Cuz the pumps are all dry
Them good ol' boys
they're all dropping like flies
And this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Now for so many years we've been on a roll
Life is grand when you've got all that oil
Ah but that's not how its going to beeeeeeee
We thought we'd live the good life and never look past
To see a day of doom but now its coming fast
And the energy just was never all that freeeeeeeee

And while the oil came from the ground
Pollutants spread for miles around
The courtroom was adjourned
And the verdict was returned
As the lefties read from the Book of Marx
And paved the world up with concrete parks
While we sang dirges in the dark
The Day The Oil Fields Died

And we were singing
Bye bye big American pie
Can't drive no Chevy to the levy
Cuz the pumps are all dry
Them good ol' boys
Are all now dropping like flies
And this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

I'm weary now of such wretched news
How can I shake these peak oil blues
I guess there's really just no waaayyyyyyy
And as the blame spreads through creation
Destroying every sovereign nation
There's really nothing left to saaayyyyyyyyy

And in the streets the children screamed
Poets died and lovers dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three things I desired most
Peace and Love and buttered toast
They caught the last train for the coast
The Day The Oil Fields Died

And we were singing
Bye bye big American pie
Can't drive no Chevy to the levy
Cuz the pumps are all dry
Them good ol' boys
Are all now dropping like flies
And this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die.

Thanks to Don McLean, it was a brilliant song and this is just parody

Bravo PMS! But it doesn't scan or rhyme quite as I recall the song. Here are the first two stanzas reworked. (The rest also needs some tuning to be singable, but I leave that to you or others)

A long long time ago
Algae died and laid aside
The mesozoic shine we draw down

Come at last to rue the day
We ever started out this way
Hear the screeching as our drills run aground

I was struck by how little needed to be changed to make this a peak oil dirge. The song came out in the early 70's after the big hippy party of the 60's was over and was a cultural lament about the 'good ol' days' of Buddy Holly before Dylan, The Beatles, and the arch-fiend (to McLean) of Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones. Change a few lines and you get an ecological lament.

Outstanding PMS! Simply brilliant. Think I'll have to try and play that soon.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('MicroHydro', 'B')ravo PMS! But it doesn't scan or rhyme quite as I recall the song. Here are the first two stanzas reworked. (The rest also needs some tuning to be singable, but I leave that to you or others)

I didn't follow the meter of the first stanza too closely and instead replaced it with something that fit the new words. Overall, though, the structure is about the same. Lovely song, depressing message. Some of you said you were going to listen to the song again, did you hear it differently?
