The San Diego baseball franchise isn't all that old in the big scheme of things having started out in 1969. We've had a few noteworthy players such as Tony Gwynn. It was real nice when Tony did so well in the World Series against the Yankees and the folks in New York gave him a standing O. Now we have a team that is very good again. We have a closer, Trevor Hoffman, who is one of the best in the game. He has an average fastball which by itself wouldn't make him too effective. But he also has a remarkable pitch which no one else seems to have. He can throw his fastball about 90 mph and he can throw a pitch which looks identical in delivery to the hitters but comes in about 12 mph slower. Today he got strike three in the ninth inning against San Fransisco to win the game throwing his change-up, as they call it. Baseball is a game of split-second reflexes. The batter is looking to match his bat-speed to the velocity of the pitch. Today's game, as in many before it, ended with a guy swinging hit bat before the ball reached the plate. Hoffman is headed to Baseball's Hall Of Fame if such a thing is still around in ten years. We have a local media baseball guy, ex-Padre Randy Jones, who was also quite remarkable in his talents. Pete Rose once said of him, 'His fastball is lousy, his curveball stinks. All the son of a bitch does is get you out.'

There was a Pittsberg Pirates pitcher who pitched a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres while tripping on LSD. The guy was so focused that nobody could do a thing against him. Life is strange.

Some lefties are cool people, some want to stifle free speech. Some of them are downright insufferable bores. Anybody want to talk some baseball? (specop The Man, that's a good one! :lol:

Its nice that San Diego, my beloved home town, has an outstanding baseball team again. Something tells me that they better go all the way this time, and maybe they will. They beat the Cardinals in that last series and the Cardinals are the top offensive team in the National League. Chicago White Sox are coming to town. We'll see how that turns out. If we can beat them then San Diego could have the honor of winning the last World Series.

Well, I guess I'm not going to be able to enjoy a conversation about baseball and drugs is the topic. A cute young Filipino-American waitress told me about an event at her local middle school. There was a health-nut teacher who was a bit goofy and always wore jogging shorts even though he wasn't a physical education teacher had some wiseguy student put LSD in his coffee cup. The teacher totally freaked and stripped himself and ranted about purple monkeys out to get him, i.e. psychotic breakdown. They sent the kid to jail but the teacher never recovered. They used to talk about the 'acid test' in the 60's. The idea was that you had to test your sanity at a very basic level. If you had latent psychoses then the LSD would bring it out and you failed the test. Lots of poor SOBs who were otherwise doing OK failed the test.

Pads were beating the Brewers 3-0 when Governor Richardson of New Mexico stepped into the radio booth to do some political schmoozing. And just like that, 4 runs for the Brewers. Damn, I hate these politicians.
