this can be applied to peak oil too:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TrueKaiser', 'g')ood find.

i believe that we have the ability to get through this unscathed. well, pretty much unscathed. if we can just band together and apply ourselves as a whole we can find a way through this. i mean, look. so it may not be much, voyager 1 is the first human-made object to enter interstallar space. in my eyes, that is QUITE an accomplishment. and notice that i said "human-made." this is the approach we need to take in order to minimize the effects of peak oil and also further ourselves in grand scheme of things.

I think you're ignoring just how much inertia this growth obsessed culture has behind it and our history to resort to war in the face of resource scarcity. Those two are like oil and water, they don't mix.

i refuse to take the doomsday approach to this situation that in my eyes the vast majority of this site's members take. that's akin to just giving up.

I didn't say anything about giving up. Considering I have kids, that's the last thing I'll do.
But I recognize the facts when they are staring at me in the face. There is optimism and then there is fantasy.
Could you climb Mt. Everest without oxygen? Sure, it’s possible, and it has been done. But the odds are not in your favor.

Your quote talks about “what man has made, man can change.”
Tell me, in relation to Peak Oil, how will we accomplish this?

What are the chances of everyone banding together for the global good? Considering the fact that nothing even close to that has happened before...I would not make that bet.

What are the chances of the world's great powers fighting for a limited resources? Considering the fact that in nearly every situation we do just that...I'm inclined to believe that we will chose war over power down.

In times of great wealth we forget that people aren't perfect. We don't like working together or sharing. The USSR failed because people are not naturally Communists. A global powerdown would require the entire world to adopt a Communist philosophy and a life of poverty (not that the two are seperate anyways). Unless you plan on eliminating the billions of people who would oppose you...a global come-together is not going to happen. It has never been done in the history of man and it does not look like it is going to happen this time either.
