The event is being used an opportunity for our Mayor to argue for voting rights here in DC. That would be pretty cool actually - I hear that having a vote in Congress is useful.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Oakley', 'I') certainly hope they don't have the demand for democracy met. Democracy is two wolves and one sheep voting on what is for dinner.

What the US is supposed to have is a republic. This is a government limited by Constitutional restraints. Unfortunately the federal government chooses to ignore much of the Constitution, and do what pleases the privileged few who have bought and paid for virtually all the politicians. To placate the plundered and controlled majority, they hand out a little of what they have plundered to make them think they are getting something. It works exactly like what happens to someone who has been kidnapped and brainwashed so that the enslaved public doesn't even try to escape if they have the opportunity (Patty Hurst for example).

One good thing about peak energy is that it is sure to help make the level of pain and suffering unacceptable and those in charge will get the blame. Maybe it will get so bad that even Madame Guillotine will be dusted off and rolled out to reek wreak her vengeance. It sure looks like the masses are slowly waking up to their subservient position.

The spelling Nazi was here.

Sorry, but i just can't get this understanding out of my head, how all the Tea Party Republicans clamouring how America is the best, and Hooray U.S., unapologetic in every conceivable way, complete with all of their sanctimonius blathering, is all simply a case of Stockholm Syndrome on steroids. Trust me. I know! This is a mental condition that is considered an illness. This perspective explains a lot, actually.

The GOP is trying to figure out how to cash in on this, but it's hard to sell young people on 50 year old conspiracy theories and racial code words.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Fishman', 'F')rom a Peak OIl point of view, of course we will see lots more of these. Unfortunately unemployment, financial ruin is the true "Powering Down"

That is exactly how I always envisioned "Powering Down". There has been a lot of cognitive dissonance through the years within the peak oil community about transition. In the end those that dreamed of smooth transition represent just a variation of the same affluent culture that wants to keep the consumer train going.

Example.......Hey man, with permaculture you don't have to work so hard, you just follow natures rhythms.......bla bla bla

Has this article been posted (from about 6 months ago)?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'Y')ou probably don’t know me, but like you I am one of those .01%ers, a proud and unapologetic capitalist. I have founded, co-founded and funded more than 30 companies across a range of industries—from itsy-bitsy ones like the night club I started in my 20s to giant ones like Amazon.com, for which I was the first nonfamily investor. Then I founded aQuantive, an Internet advertising company that was sold to Microsoft in 2007 for $6.4 billion. In cash. My friends and I own a bank.

I have been rewarded obscenely for my success, with a life that the other 99.99 percent of Americans can’t even imagine. Multiple homes, my own plane, etc., etc. You know what I’m talking about.

But let’s speak frankly to each other. I’m not the smartest guy you’ve ever met, or the hardest-working. I was a mediocre student. I’m not technical at all—I can’t write a word of code. What sets me apart, I think, is a tolerance for risk and an intuition about what will happen in the future. Seeing where things are headed is the essence of entrepreneurship. And what do I see in our future now?

I see pitchforks.

Same guy did a TED talk.

Very good D!
I like that guy.

The most insidious thing about trickle-down economics isn’t believing that if the rich get richer, it’s good for the economy. It’s believing that if the poor get richer, it’s bad for the economy.

There but for the grace of Jeff ...

Spot on.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

What we are seeing no is the wealthy saying that poverty is good for people, it makes them noble. David Brooks said poor people used to be honest and God-fearing, like rich people, but antipoverty programs have made the poor immoral.
