Ok to play the devil's advocate..
A *big* hurricane hitting NYC is a super doomer scenario. That's what caused the hype. They should have calmed down though as the hurricane downgraded. A cat 1 is just a windy tropical storm. Even a cat 2 won't take your roof off, you can ride it out safe and snug in your home unless it's a mobile home.
A cat 3 or above hit on NYC would be bad, wind effect is multiplied in the upper stories of high rises. I suspect they'd be okay even in a cat 5 though.. structural engineers would have the answer here, what the wind rating is.
Biggest threat to NYC from a high cat cane would be flooding and power outages.
So..
It's not a matter of "nothingburger" we all over-reacted, you just have to follow the procedure. If it looks like a cat 2 is coming your way, you have voluntary evacs in flood zones and get the old folks out to shelters. Just follow the drill but otherwise go about your life.
(incidentally there were 11 fatalities from this storm)
