Well, the original post was about people that were not only mentally disabled, but also seriously dangerous to others. No one really would be surprised to see a large extended family caring for one of their own who couldn't be on their own mentally, whether now, or in a more deprived future, if they are not dangerous. The problem is that there really are folks who are mentally disabled, and disturbed in such a way as to be a continuing, immediate, physical hazard to those around them; if they also happen to be physically strong, they can easily overwhelm what a family can manage.
Go back a few generations, and these folks were permanently locked up in mental institutions; and as cruel as it sounds, is it really worse than letting them run crazy and free, kill some people, and then have to be "put down"?
You can't fix everyone, even today.
