EEEEEK! If nobody paid income taxes the country would go down faster than if all oil vanished today! The biggest reason for income taxes is to prevent war between the states.

The most hated thing (my pet peev) about taxes is how F%$#@ conveluted they are. (and ofcourse that thay're high)...what the heck is wrong with a flat 15% tax & you get to write off the first $20,000 ???

I think everybody could go for that.

Even in the BEST of ancient times they split the harvest into 10 equal portions & gave 1 of those portions to the gov't so 1 tribe would not have to attack another tribe for food (if 1 tribe had a bad harvest).

Building is always better than destroying!

I've heard of this before... it's a loophole that anybody can exploit. The only difference here is that this guy got away with it, countless others are crushed by the government. Let's face it though, even though the tax laws are convoluted beyond belief and in favor of those in power (Corps.) they are nessesary for us to properly exploit third world nations.

K_semler, I may agree with you (the current income tax system is nothing but theft!) but please don't just post a link. Write a paragraph or two about the link or the issue, but please don't just post a link and leave it at that.

No the lobbyist for HR Block and the association of CPAs would have a piss fit. Besides it violates the law of governmental entropy. The government never makes things more straightforward. They plaster over the old screwed up bureacratic mess with a new layer of bureacracy. Over time things become more and more and more complex and obtuse. Eventually it gets to the point where half the population is employed just interpreting and enforcing the bureacratic rules. The California constitution is an excellent example of this process at work. When it was originally drafted in 1849, it was 18 pages. It has been ammended so many times that it now runs 110 pages! That's not the laws, just the constitution. The regulations by all the state agencies in California run in excess of 20,000 pages.

I personally know an individual who is a CPA who has earned over $150,000 per year since 1978 and not filed any tax return. This he explained this to me over quite a few drinks on several occasions, unfortunately I was also drinking and did not fully understand. He has a legal basis to avoid criminal prosecution, but admits that if the IRS tried to take his assets in the US they could. They never have even contacted him, and as I understand it, he keeps most of his money in bank and brokerage accounts outside of the US, somewhere in the offshore British protectorate islands like the Turks & Caicos and the Caymens.

If one had any questions as to the complex nature of our tax system, all one has to do is read the link posted at the top by k-semler

8O 8O

Our tax system is a farce, an abomination, ridiculous, oppressive, nonsensical, psychotic, retarded, nuts, bonkers, overbearing, a sham, counter productive and … phew … the ultimate ‘great money grab’ !!

Oh … did I forget … it’s retarded? Oh… I already mentioned that one.

Yeah I hate paying taxes every year they go up and all government does is expand and become more restrictive on my rights.

On the subject of taxes the filing of a tax return is totally voluntary however once you volunteer you unfortunately cannot unvolunteer.

There are actually now legal ways to avoid income taxes. One good way is to flip your primary residence every two years. You get a $250K capital gain exemption. You could make an income tax free living by buying repos and reselling them as long as they remain your primary residence. Another way is to open a Roth IRA.
