12,000 People have been evacuated in Los Alamos for fear of the Plant catching fire as the Wild Fires are 0% contained and out of control at the present time!

Fires have already sparked one fire at the Los Alamos lab but it was contained. Forecast of winds make the fires direction unpredictable and at present the fire is right across the road from the Los Alamos plant.

In reports from Nuclear watchdog groups there are 30,000 barrels of Plutonium contaminated waste in 55 gallon barrels being stored in tents on the property that are in danger of catching fire with the possibility of spreading a radioactive plum.

In Nebraska the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant Main Building is Underwater and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has now put mandatory evacuation in place for a square 10 mile area. The 10 mile evac may seem like they are at least taking a step in the right direction until one comes to the realization that the 10 mile radius invoked is actually a outdated guideline procedure that has not changed since 1978! with that in mind and the fact that the dams up-steam are about to burst as they are filling up to max capacity. it may be time to start to prepare in one way or another.

Unfortunately, we can't get the animals to stay out of the exclusion zones, and thus at Fuko we have earless rabbits being born and now whales testing positive for radioactivity. However, for all the humans, they probably ought to follow the evac order and get out of the 10 mile exclusion zone, radioactive plum cloud or not.

Not to worry, Folks. Nucyular is THE way to go. It's safe, almost harmless, and is the obvious way forward to insure an energy plentiful future. Forget the solar crowd because as we all know, the sun doesn't shine at night. Forget the wind crowd because as we all know, the appearance of wind turbines on the horizon creates an aesthetic accpetance curve similar to the construction of grain elevators that are visible from 30 miles away! Forget the geothermal crowd because as we all know, no real Americans actually understand it, and we all don't live next to a volcano. Clean, safe solutions that provide literally endless amounts of free energy just aren't worth the financial price of lobbying for their adoption. Utility companies don't stand to gain anything if everyone has unlimited free energy. That would be a very bad thing and would cost millionaires their jobs. Yikes!

The "30,000 barrels of plutonium" is hype - it is a lot (20,000 barrels) - but it is plutonium contaminated waste (not reactor waste) Mostly contaminated gloves, clothing etc...- considered low level and was planned to be sequestered in WIPP. Los Alamos was evacuated not because of danger of radiation release but because of the danger of the wildfire. Its not like the barrels are sitting in a forest or masses of brush and are in high danger of catching fire. Forest and brush ARE kept cleared well away. I have been there...

It looks like the danger to Los Alamos proper (the town and the lab) is passing (the backburns are working) But this is a horrendous fire (state record size now) and it is still progressing into fuel rich forest lands and will continue to threaten numerous small towns.

Clearly Fukishima reminded us ALL that there is lots of potential danger in Nuclear power, especially when the plants are run poorly, aging unsafe designs aren't shut down, etc. (As always, cost trumps safety until proven otherwise -- in spades).

Media (or bogosphere) hysteria like this shows the heightened awareness.

This might be a good thing for the first world if it FORCES politicians to mandate some sort of reasonable balance of cost, enforced safety standards, etc.

I'd actually prefer to see worries like this of POTENTIAL problems like the Texas wildfires garner national attention/concern, than just have everyone go back to sleep and into "not my problem - it's a Japanese problem" mode -- which happens FAR too often after one-time energy fiascos.

Something to consider regarding nukes and safety and aging reactors and cooling systems - Japan, Russia, and the US are 1st World countries with the (supposed) financial abilities to safely and effectively maintain our nuke plants WITHOUT risking public disaster. Granted, thus trust seems to have been misplaced as evidenced by several nuclear disasters around the world recently, but just imagine the horror of a 3rd World country being entrusted to run a nuke plant WITHOUT the monetary and physical resources necessary to continue safe operations indefinitely. Don't even think about the consequences of throwing something unexpected like an earthquake or a flood or a fire, or a tsunami in the mix. In that case, end of story. Weapons aside, there are lots of other reasons to be opposed to the proliferation of nuclear technologies around the world.
