$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('sparky', 'M')ost U.S. citizens think of alternative society as a mix of Mad Max and the old West
with a bit of "the little house on the prairie "

That would be an awesome combination :)

I get your main point, but I'm not sure that our fedgov will have a choice about whether to give up power. Will they have the resources to maintain their power in the decades to come? I have no idea, but a police state is certainly not an inevitability given our current and long-term financial woes. Maybe (if we're lucky) the US will become the next Somalia instead of the next North Korea....

In the mean time, I'll continue groping my way along this foggy road of the future, indulging in my self-sufficiency / preparedness hobby, regularly inspired by my time as an active poster here at PO.com, and as a casual reader of other doom sites (Greer, Kunstler, Orlov, FerFAL, Rawles, AR15.com's Survival forum, the Oil Drum, etc.). Self-sufficiency and preparedness go against the grain of American society, it's easy to default into the hyper-specialized, suburbanized, techno-optimist, pampered spoiled brat of a commuter-consumer that American culture tries to convince you to be. PO.com and other doom sites help me stay focused on finding a more resilient, sustainable way to live.

But mostly I enjoy the random interesting discussions we have here, even if they're “off topic.” Helps keep the mind sharp and it's an enjoyable way to spend some of my off hours. After a week of hard physical work, I'm happy to veg out in front of the 'puter for a little while and talk to smart folks from around the world while indulging my doom addiction.

As others have mentioned, I particularly value the Planning forum. Wish it was more active.

I think we all see the bigger picture...some of us have gotten over it, some haven't and many never will.

I think there will be new insights gleaned when major world events happen because they will narrow down all the different scenarios to a more defined path, whatever that may be. Other than that I don't think there's much new, just people trying to process and make sense of everything among like minded folks. Eventually you get to a point where it's in your best interest to move on, be pragmatic about it all and hope for the best.
