$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Lore', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('radon', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('crude_intentions', 'T')he American dream was to live comfortably (Jobs) retire happy (pension) and die in peace at a ripe old age (health care).
Sounds very much like the late Soviet Union. I think you forgot the house ownership, the Soviet Union did not have that one.

Some people (non-American) argue that the American dream is meritocracy.

I thought the American Dream was to fight endless wars, while crushing the enemy, driving him before you and to hear the lamentation of the women.

Wait a minute,... maybe that was Conan's dream I'm thinking of?

Well. I am puzzled, but this is fine.

For non-Americans the American dream is often like the Blue Fairy for David in the Artificial Intelligence movie. It embodies something that they think they lack here and now. A long ago, one gentleman aspiring to move to the US literally told me that for him the American dream is meritocracy, and that he wants to go to the US to become a part of a meritocratic society. He was not the only one to think so - this was actually a fairly common view in some places outside the US. He has since moved to the US. Hopefully, his dream came true.

When the banksters want something, our policymakers move with the speed of Mercury and the determination of Ares. It’s only when the rest of us need something that there is paralysis.

How free are we today with the dominance of globalist capital and militarized security apparatus?

The American Dream is that each generation lives better than the one that came before it.

Tyler, you (IMO) always make thoughtful posts, and I generally agree with you on your posts.

However, in this case, there is a HUGE assumption (IMO) here that is being called into question (in America) by the vast majority of folks that aren't fairly far to the right politically.

This is only addressing money (i.e. material wealth).

In a resource constrained world with a growing population -- how can folks who aren't science deniers, AGW deniers, finite resource deniers, etc. think one dimensionally like this? It just doesn't seem to pass the "reality" test anymore.

I know the cornies assume that technology will save us, and perhaps it will buy us time, but now, questions like having safety, security, "enough" goods for contentment (instead of showing off for the neighbors), medical care, etc. seem to be IN THE FACES of a huge segment of the population -- especially longer term.

And the trends are dismal. How can we call that "each generation lives better"?
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

Good point. Material wealth is a rubbish metric to use to judge someone by, and in any case, I think we are getting towards the first generation of people who will be worse off than their parents since this whole growth spurt began. Try looking at unemployment rates amongst younger people today for evidence of that. Many of which also have ridiculously high levels of debt from being a student as well.

And while we're at rubbish metrics, you can take GDP as well, which is woefully inadequate at anything besides making headlines for BAUers, who don't even understand what it is.

The American dream may be over:

http://inteldaily.com/2011/04/ten-examp ... the-brave/

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '#')3 At one public school in the Chicago area, children have been banned from bringing their lunches from home. Yes, you read that correctly. Students at that particular school are absolutely prohibited from bringing lunches from home. Instead, it is mandatory that they eat the food that the school cafeteria serves

#6 In Missouri of all places, two young girls named Abigail and Caitlin Mills were recently taught a lesson on how to be good citizens in the emerging totalitarian control grid going up all over the United States. After a complaint from a neighbor, the city of Hazelwood cracked down on the two girls and told them that they must stop selling girl scout cookies in their own front yard.

#9 One Mississippi state judge recently issued an order for state officials to gather and deliver to him the names of every single child that is being homeschooled in the state. The frightening thing is that the judge did this all on his own. Nobody requested this information and there is no case pending for which this information would be required
