The real irony is that so many old folks are Republican.

I wonder why that is? When I was in my teens and twenties, most of the young were Dimocrats and the elders were Repuglicans too. Either Dimocrats die disproportionally young, or they change their beliefs after more experience in the real world. Alternatively, it could just be self economic interest.
Young people normally don't have a lot of money or assets. So naturally they would want government subsidies for the poor, a highly progressive tax system, and perhaps be looking for a replacement for their mother who took care of them before they became an adult. Hence the Democratic position.
As one gets older their income goes up, they build up assets, and generally become more educated and more wealthy. So it is in their economic interest to keep taxes low, limit the amount of money taken by death taxes, and generally protect the assets they have acquired through a strong national defense. Hence the Republican position.
Obviously some people are more financially successful than others. If you were not very successful you would still want the government to take care of you. So it is in their economic interest to continue supporting the Dem position. Finally, some people are always Dem or Rep leaning, these types are willing to sacrifice their economic interests for their ideological beliefs.
