$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pretorian', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Serial_Worrier', 'G')iven they were delivering mail in arctic conditions that sort-of makes sense. But not for an office worker.
I dont know, I think this example (from the book about coffee I read 25 years ago) is from Denmark. On the other hand, they have Greenland, so you might be right.

Greenland is not a Scandinavian country, and although technically owned and subsidised by Denmark it's generally never referred to as such. Scandinavia is only Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

As for the extreme coffee drinking it might well be true; I have heard of men from Norrland (northern Sweden) downing 25-30 cups a day while walking around their neighbourhood, getting invited to farms and whatever, drinking a couple of cups at every place as a social custom.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Serial_Worrier', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pretorian', 'y')ou can die from an overdose of water or anything else. Still I dont think a normal young man would die from 70 cups of coffee.

How long would it take you to drink 70 cups of coffee? Even the most addicted coffee-freaks don't drink more then 10 cups a day, which is probably close to the 1/8 of a teaspoon that he should have used.

when i worked at SLAC, the linear accelerator at Stanford, i was very impressed by the physicists' ability to drink coffee. they were in the 20+ cup a day range. that's basically where i learned to drink coffee.

and i'm drinking coffee right now !

one of the things that intrigues me is the things people do before surfing big-waves in cold water. before i realized that my limit was about 20 feet (body surfing), i used to think i could body-surf Maverick's, the deep-water break in Half Moon Bay.

so i sought out counsel on the Mav's forums. boy, that is the wrong place to go for health advice ! i was expecting something like, "you need to be able to swim 50 yards butterfly, followed immediately by 50 yards underwater holding your breath". what i heard was, "oh just come on out. most of those guys smoke enough pot to kill an elephant !"

as i later learned, about 2/3 of the Mav's surfing culture was meth-fueled. some of them have since "come out" about it, notably Peter Mel & Daryl Virostko.

but, getting back to coffee & caffeine - that is a Sine Qua Non (without which there is none) in the big-wave surfing community. part of that is because you need a serious JOLT of something before swimming in 55 degree water with great-white sharks begins to be fun. also because many of the best days of big-wave surfing occur after a partial night's sleep, between early-onset adrenaline and having to drive for a few hours to get to a dawn kick-off.

of course, there's also a lot of caffeine use in the tech community in Silicon Valley.

who knows 8) Peak Coffee could be a bigger deal than Peak Oil.

When I was 18 and between jobs, I was hanging out in a coffee shop with friends for long periods each day, and there alone would down 15 or 20 cups or so. Then some more at home and elsewhere.

Was doing fine until i had some kind of strange effect come over me after seeing the original Exorcist movie. Every partly-open closet or cupboard door had a creature in it that was going to jump out and grab me. I could not sleep or go in my basement at night - I would just stand at the top of the stairs and be too petrified to take a single step down. If I drove at night, I had to completely turn the rear view mirror so I could not see the rear of the car because if I didn't I would then see something back there that would kill me. The whole nighttime world harbored strange demons and monsters.

This went on for months until I fell into a job at a gas station and stopped hanging out at the coffee shop. It was one big DUH for me when I finally realized multiple pots of strong coffee per day probably had a part to play in my mental dysfunctional state.

The ever rising popularity of caffeine in America has me wonder if that is a clue to the source of some of our citizens' current political obsessions and theories. (Such as "Obama is an ALIEN!!!" )

Recently a frat boy came close to death after drinking a small bottle of Kikomans soy sauce. The electrolyte imbalance sent him into seizures and his heart nearly stopped.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('onlooker', 'T')een's Death: How Caffeine Can Kill a Healthy Person

Like with most things, it depends on how it's used, and by who.

Caffeine is a drug. So is aspirin. Either can be dangerous if taken in large doses, especially by people with certain classes of health problems.

And yet, between all the coffee, tea. soda, and other substances containing caffeine are consumed in abundance daily by hundreds of millions of people all over the world, if it were killing the average person left and right, surely someone would notice and report it.

Of course, people do LOTS of things which are bad for them but won't kill them in the short term. I personally have cut way down on caffeine because as I've gotten older, my heart (speeding up) is affected by it more, and better safer than sorry, IMO.
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

Good reply Outcast. I would say a holistic approach to health can be the most effective:
1. Some exercise
2. Sufficient sleep
3, Avoidance of continuous exposure to anything potentially harmful
4. Early detection-Annual checkup
5. Healthy Diet
6. Meditation for stress relief
7. Lots of drinking water
8. Some sun though wary of midday sun
9. Taking a multi vitamin/mineral supplement every day
10. Lots of laughing for mental health (It is a crazy world out there) haha
