the imminence of peak oil ,
in fact they have been dropping hints the size of houses for a few years now
they are not the problem , 7 billions consumers are the problem
Peak oil warning are like earthquake warnings , panicking the good folks is not useful at all
and there is NOTHING which can be done
anyway the first step is denial , it will last well into the decline ,
then is anger , not very useful either

as for the shape of society post peak oil ,
well if we use coal we go back to the coal age ... steam engine and 19th century working condition
if we go back to the sustainable wood burning age ....middle ages and feudal system
the population numbers will naturally adjust itself to the new level ,

A sudden crash a la mad max is most unlikely , though not impossible in some regions
