That all depends where you live.
Let's assume we can get 5% interest somehwere safe.

$500k yeilding $25k.

$10k block on Pasoe River, Cape York, Australia. Another $10k for a rammed earth shack and fittings.

$10k block and house, north coast Papua New Guinea.

$10k block and house Catanduanes Island, Philippines.

$20k block and house Batanes Island Group, north Philippines.

(these are all mountainous coasts, with rainforest areas and low population. Cape York being the most serious getaway, Batanes being the most opportune under BAU. The others are surf spots between, at 1 weeks sailing intervals.)

I still have $400k to buy or build a yacht and equip it, $60k to load her up with tradeables.

Really some people have no imagination, or let it be their enemy instead of their best friend. :-D

Not exactly sure what you mean Lore?
Right now if everything went bust, no money anywhere, I know exactly what to do, how to do it with what I have on hand and the people around me. Whether it were to happen where I work in remote Australia or here in the Philippines, I would barely have time to catch my breath. Narz put this thread up as a creative thinking space I think, not to collect commiserations on what we don't and aren't gonna have.

Convert million to gold, silver and a basket of emerging market currencies in an offshore bank. Emigrate to a 3rd world country like Surinam. Learn local language. Get to know my new neighbors and find out how they've been living without all the modern conveniences. Listen carefully to their experience and advice. Purchase appropriate land and equipment needed for sustained living in new environment. Continue to keep good relations with neighbors.

I used to like buying a lotto ticket now and then, it was a great entertainment value because you could daydream for days at least - until you saw the next jackpot number or heard some news bit.

That was back when I was making good money. As funny as it sounds, now that I don't make much money at all I don't get nearly as much entertainment from a ticket. A month or two ago I bought a $60m ticket after probably a couple of years of abstinence and couldn't even get up a good fantasy.

Waste of a good dollar!

SeaGypsy and ian got it right, that sum can still get your somewhere. It's like choosing between Lambo and same performance envelope professionally done kitcar racer, it's the same (ok sans some creature comforts), but the price is like 1:10. Another example, stupid pseudo luxury yacht and overpowered motorboats v. 40-50' bluewater sailing cat. Price and value absolutely incomparable, especially in post PO scenario. Yep, if someone wants to keep up with the Joneses (that example with posh LA living), it's never gonna be enough though. People are stupid, incl. many of those with that $1m. :roll:
