$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jdmartin', 'F')orgot San Luis Trust...three not-too-small banks and one smaller one.

Thanks jd, you are right, that makes 4 yesterday and 11 this month so far, which is the total of banks that went down last month, so this one can easily surpass Jan.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Troubled banks rise to highest level in 18 years
By MARCY GORDON / AP Business Writer / Bismark Tribune Online / Feb 23, 2011

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The number of banks at risk of failing made up nearly 12 percent of all federally insured banks in the final three months of 2010, the highest level in 18 years.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp said Wednesday that the number of banks on its confidential "problem" list rose to 884 in the October-December quarter, up from 860 in the previous quarter. Those are banks rated by examiners as having very low capital cushions against risk.

Just one today, and we have surpassed last month with 12 failures for February.
Valley Community Bank
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')eb 25 (Reuters) - Regulators closed one bank in the U.S. on Friday, bringing to 23 the total number of bank failures in 2011.

In 2010 157 banks failed following 140 failures in 2009.

The bulk of the failures increasingly have been been smaller institutions, those with less than $1 billion in assets, as large banks have recovered more quickly from the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

The FDIC announced the closure on Friday of Valley Community Bank, St. Charles, Illinois, which had about $123.8 million in assets and $124.2 million in deposits as of December 31. First State Bank, Mendota, Illinois will assume the deposits and has agreed to purchase essentially all of the assets.

Banks that failed in 2010 had total assets of $92 billion, compared with $169.7 billion the previous year.

FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair has said the agency expects the number of failures to drop in 2011.

In the FDIC's most recent quarterly report, released on Feb. 23, the agency said the number of banks on the "problem list" grew to 884 from 860.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he world's third-largest bank is bust By Simon Caufield Mar 28, 2011

The Fed will have to fire up the printing presses again
The world's third-largest bank is bust.

It is a US bank with $2.55 trillion of assets. Only BNP Paribas and Royal Bank of Scotland are larger. It's way too big to fail.

When it goes bust, it will be bailed out. And Ben Bernanke, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, will have no choice but to fire up the printing presses all over again.

....

Have you guessed which bank I'm talking about? It's the US Federal Reserve Bank itself.

The Fed is bust – and that's not just my opinion
I'm serious. It may be the US central bank, but it's still a bank like all the rest.

Yeah, that one in Birmingham was a biggie too. Cost the FDIC about 225 million. 73 branches I think it said, and about 3 billion in Assets. Ouch~
