I agree with you that Ruppert's conspiracy theories harms our case much more than it helps. I love the stuff, but it makes peak oil just another of the dark conspiracies he has turned up. Crossing the Rubicon was the big book of conspiracy theories. It was fun, but ultimately not helpful at all in understanding peak oil and its ramifications. Heinberg's book was much better, but as you say the pseudo intellectualism make it popular with a certain crowd that is comfortable with graphs and factoids.
Chip's book has the best chance of appealing to a wider audience. If it could get out there more...
