I have just taken a bit of time to reread all of this thread which goes back a year and a half. What a sad state of affairs. The most depressing thing you can get from the thread is it relates how a government official charged with making the tough decisions about how to spend limited funds to solve a very serious problem got over ruled by a bought and paid for congress. Then we have the car manufacturers that know the facts joining together and saying what amounts to "The emperor has on a wonderful suit of cloths " so their R&D departments can get their share of the 200 million being wasted.
Any serious look at the potential uses of hydrogen fueled cars and trucks has to look at the source of the energy used to get the hydrogen into the tank. You cannot use any of the grid electricity we have today as it is all being used and a significant amount is being generated by thirty year old nuclear power plants that will soon have to be decommissioned. Unless you are for building thirty new nuclear power plants to replace these plus another hundred of them to power your hydrogen production and distribution system you are not being realistic about the scale of the problem.
The idea that you can use solar and wind to generate enough hydrogen to run a significant share of the US car fleet requires a total lack of sixth grade math skills.
Of course the champions of fuel cell cars will dismiss this and say that breakthroughs are just around the corner and keep posting vapid little posts from green sites that are making a tidy little sum preaching this new green religion.

Pstar, are you 9? What would be the point of buying a hydrogen powered vehicle if there is no place within the range of the vehicle that sells the fuel? How would it help the environment to buy a $50,000 paper weight and still be forced to use gasoline powered vehicles?
