$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mattduke', ' ') One can imagine a scenario where as EROEI drops off that oil companies will fail even as the oil price skyrockets. In that situation a direct oil-price tracking ETF like USO would make sense.

Oil futures with options out to 2015 or beyond in that case. The podcast I referred to explains the weakness of OIL ETF's. It's worth listening to.

Thanks Ibon, I'll check it out. I do believe oil price ETF's are more for short term trading and I don't own any myself.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ibon', 'C')omplimenting davep's post and also Outcast-searcher here is a podcast for you to all listen through. it will review the following ways to invest if you have a conviction, that inspite of demand destruction and cycles, the price of oil will rise:

Oil equity stocks
OIl ETF's
Oil Futures
Oil Futures with options

It is really worth listening to this. It also mirrors what I am doing with a significant part of my net worth.

Peak oil is just one thing to consider when it comes to finance and the best returns may not come from oil related assets. Besides oil decline you also have to consider Fed monetary policy and sovereign debt as well as countless other factors when coming up with a strategy. I will say that in this kind of climate (rising oil prices + loose monetary policy) it's commodities that see the biggest returns on investment. Any commodity will make you money at this point but in order to maximize profits you have to look at the fundamentals of each one on an individual basis. Silver and wheat have performed extremely well this year and will probably continue to do so for the next 6-12 months at least.

You can certainly make a fortune at this time but doing a good job requires devoting a lot of time to research and analysis and you have to constantly review all of you positions as things change. You can certainly develop a successful strategy that doesn't require so much work on your part but don't expect to make a fortune unless you've got a lot of money to start with and are willing to make investing your full time job.
