Kroger brand and food 4 less store brans most products ( the discounted store brand) are labeled ( product of USA) unlike their competitor whose store brands are labeled ( in violation of food labeling laws) distributed byXXXX or like conagra brands distributed by, or like kraft global foods distributed by... maybe it is the effort to clearly label their discount brand foods as product of USA that is cutting their profit margins?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('vtsnowedin', '
')If you have two adults working in a family then no one has the time or the energy to cook so you eat a lot of pre made/prepackaged stuff as well as buy take out or eat out quite frequently. Let one or the other get laid off and the one that is home Should start cooking as he or she has the time and their efforts can go a long way towards making up for the lost income. They should have time to tend to a garden too.

Yep, but both cooking and gardening are lost skills for many folks. :(

When I look in the baskets of the folks next to me at the grocery store I can't imagine how they afford so much processed food. 8O

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]A&P Supermarket Chain Expected To File For Bankruptcy, Another Harbinger Wipe Out?

Stunning that anyone in this environment can file for Chapter 11. But that is precisely what is happening: supermarket chain A&P, with law firm Kirkland and Ellis and financial advisor Moelis in tow, is about to file for bankruptcy, Bloomberg reports. It is ironic that instead of passing through costs supermarkets are instead opting out to default. Nonetheless, this is likely telling on the status of food margins at major supermarkets.

Well isn't this odd.. another grocery chain in trouble despite the "recovery."
