I agree Newfie. I think Revi's idea is we need to become as handy and resourceful as Third Worlders. People who can make useful items out of junk. Because we are going to be left with enormous piles of junk, but not much else. :( And even at that,a lot of the junk is being sent to China....

Yup, people confuse "ignorance" and "stupid."

I think that was the real point of "Guns, Germs, and Steel."

As an ex American Aussie married to a provincial 3rd world family my view of the ups and downs is this:

3rd World plus: ease of business due to well organised and prevalent black market
access to local products, neighborhood gardens and restaurants flourish
cost of justice goes way down (summary justice dominates)
being on the edge of survival for generations inspires fitness and enterprise
3rd worlders are infinitely friendlier than westerners generally

3rd World minus: lack of personal luxuries.
ease of death

There are people who relatively flourish in any given situation. The ship has sailed for the USA to have a gracefull transition to sustainability, a generation ago it was decided that "Hell If We Can Go To The Moon We Can Do Anything!!! To hell with the clog wearers and their bicycles, wind turbines and tidal power, we weant to the God Damn Moon!"

Hey efarmer, you didn't tell us about the bubblegum swap card game scam the fat idiot kid won his fate in? Perhaps another time...

"Ease of death" doesn't sound so bad to me considering the painful and horrific lengths our society goes to keep (privileged) people alive for as long as possible no matter what :(

Personally, I hope and pray for an easy death.

Perhaps Seagypsy. Smooth sailing with that crowded boat of yours and all the best.

I finally found the post I was looking for.
