If I could respond to the comment on Fusion. I haven't seen the program yet but was involved in it's making. Yes, it has occurred to "us" that we may not solve the many problems associated with making fusion a reality. However I do not regard optimism as disgusting. This power source is potentially the most important in Human history and to disregard it would be incredibly stupid. The cost of the projects are often regarded as a waste of money, but the sums involved are tiny when compared to the money spent worldwide on Energy R&D and subsidies. Fusion is not the answer to the coming energy crisis, which will be on us much too quickly, but that is no reason to vehemently attack a valid line of research. Please feel free to attack goverments putting this forward as a panacea and the media for misrepresenting and misreporting, but please keep things in perspective. Always with the negative waves Moriarty, always with the negative waves. :-D

I think in the planning stages of the show they considered making 'You are all screwed' but decided some optimism would be more appropriate.

It's just to bad that heavy research wasn't begun decades ago. Or even now instead of dumping billions into military adventures we did some major work on the real problems.

When it comes time to start cutting back I bet those research projects that need it most will be the first on the chopping blocks.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Twilight', 'W')ouldn't there also be a buoyancy problem for anything floating over the release?

Yes, ships will sink. I read an article theorizing the Bermuda Triangle may have caused ships to sink b/c of methane seeps in the area.

Discovery Channel - Disaster in the Gulf

Unread postby Maddog78 » Thu 10 Jun 2010, 23:30:32

Anybody watching this?
They are showing the control center and explaining all aspects of the operations, including the relief well.

Some of you may recall I mentioned consultants like Wild Well Control in another thread.
The VP of Engineering and a Drilling Engineer from Wild Well are on the team.

The head of the ROV team has over 30 years experience.
Wonder what he thought of James Cameron giving him advice?

I missed the first part but it was a pretty good show.
Just to let you know it was in no way a "Big Oil apologist" show.

They interviewed several eviromentalists and left no doubts that this is a terrible disaster.

They had the Dean of the School of Engineering for SMU who gave insights regularly through the show.

The BP team has 50 engineers from many companies working around the clock.
They're trying, they just haven't had much luck.
The show also interviews a guy, forget his position, a university prof. I think he was who said we should be looking for energy from other sources since we don't have good enough technology to be out in this mile deep water. Just thought I'd point that out in case some think this show was just a one sided program.

Here is the Whackjobs personal Manifesto. I guess he believed in Al Gore too much. http://tmz.vo.llnwd.net/o28/newsdesk/tm ... emands.pdf

It is fortunate that an officer was able to prevent his insanity and terrorism from extracting the life of anyone beyond himself.

Be good to each other out there, take the world in bites you can digest,
and push away from the table of problems often and take a walk, say a prayer, whatever
gives you peace and civility.

Give the guy credit. He took one step in reducing the human population for which he had contempt by committing suicide by police.

If the world needs fewer people and some must go, looks like he made a good selection.

That guy isn't left. He's insane.

Left leaning whackjobs have manifestos. Right leaning whackjobs have talk radio and Fox news.

Quantitatively, in terms of how many people each manage to get killed (directly or indirectly), which is the greatest evil?

Mentally ill people who escalate to violence have the entire gamut of "causes" to manifest their illness into tragedy and destruction. It can be political, religious, romantic, environmental, abortion, patriotic, or whatever subject they deem as worthy enough to fixate upon and use as a cloak for their own chaos and despair to hide under until it will not fit there any more and shows itself as plain insanity.

Oooh, now there's a hypothetical for you.... what if he was.....What if he was a frequent poster of PO.com, and suddenly flipped out....What if you go back onto his PC and check his history and found out that he was, in fact, a frequent viewer....

Did this lunatic fringe website push him over the edge? What moral responsibility would we share for doing so?
