I don't get how this would be any different or considered to be worse than 'monitoring' every phone call, email, web search, site visit, etc. Or, compared to the current pervasive land-based video surveillance all around YOU.

Police cameras to flood Manhattan to 'prevent attacks'

Unread postby KevO » Wed 05 May 2010, 11:35:17

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')EW YORK — New York officials say they could stop attacks like the attempted Times Square car bomb by expanding a controversial surveillance system so sensitive that it will pick up even suspicious behavior.
New York is already a heavily policed city, with 35,000 officers and a counterterrorism bureau -- the first of its kind in the country -- partnering the FBI.

Matthew Clark, who has a PhD from the University of Chicago, and Gregory Malandrucco say they were eating at Artuto's Tacos on February 6th when they were attacked in the parking lot by who they later learned were two male and one female plainclothes officers.

Police With Assault Rifles Swarming Parasite City

Perhaps the Obama family is going out for ice cream, it's another citizen intimidation campaign, or maybe they are demanding pay raises.

Police Rampage After Katrina

Unread postby PrestonSturges » Wed 25 Aug 2010, 12:24:58

Tonight (Aug 25) on PBS "Frontline," they examine the roughly dozen random shootings of NOLA citizens by New Orleans police. As far as I can tell it does not touch on the random shootings of blacks by whites after Katrina. There have been a number of convictions and plea bargains as these investigations move forward.

In times of civil emergency, the authorities were more concerned about protecting water damaged merchandise than citizens lives (and only one of the shootings seems to have involved actual "looting").

And there were plenty of whites so convinced that they were going to be raped and cannibalized by rampaging negroes that they were ready to start randomly shooting black people as soon as the lights went out. Or maybe it was just for fun.

I think congress needs to hold hearings about how the networks were carrying stories about stacks of murder victims in the Superdome and blacks shooting their Glocks at Coast Guard helicopters, none of which happened.

New Orleans is just above and just below seal level and has been pumping since the 1890's to stay dry,
the wetlands that protect it have been wiped out by canals and channelization, the sea levels are set to rise, the gulf is going to experience hurricanes for the foreseeable future. There is never enough justice in a large metropolitan area, and when disaster strikes, there is often almost none.

Congress is not going to fix this with hearings, which does not mean injustice was not rampant after Katrina.

I love the city, it's culture, and it's history, I just don't see it going into the future unless we become Dutch and tend and cater to it constantly.

I think it will come down to what can be done versus what we wish we could do for New Orleans,
not that it will go away, but the attrition is going to be severe.

Police Now Patrolling Ski Areas

Unread postby mattduke » Wed 01 Dec 2010, 10:11:44

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')t’s a windless morning at Steamboat Ski Resort, and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” pulses through a bright Gondola Square. Shuffling across the slushy snow, skiers line up to board the Steamboat Gondola, but first they must unzip, de-layer, and turn out their pockets. Like travelers at Denver International Airport, these would-be gondola riders must run through a gauntlet of security checkpoints before taking to the skies.

Downhill skiing is a blast, but it's a pretty big waste of energy.
I went last year and it was amazing to be flying down a mountain.
I think I am done with it.
I haven't quit using my skinny skis, however.

I am from Oakland, California. Grew up there. What's skiing?

As esteemed author and professor of English at the University of Texas, Eric Miles Williamson, correctly noted and stated in his book, Oakland, Jack London, and Me, "... kids who grow up in Oakland do not learn to ski..."

... but we are all well acquainted with regular police patrols. Police patrolling ski slopes? Must be a demographic thing.
