Introducing Cornucopia, The Food Printer

(PhysOrg.com)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'U')S scientists have introduced a concept design of the "Cornucopia" or Digital Fabricator, a "personal food factory" able to print food from specified ingredients, with no waste at the point of cooking.

Mmmm... Ingredients.

Ok I know this is going to sound corunucopian...

But it's funny, things are finally starting to "look" like the 21st century. Like this new exo-skeleton for the handicapped:

Image
http://dvice.com/archives/2010/07/even-new-zealan.php

Yes, it moves very slow. But this wheelchair-bound man was able to find work in a machining shop, he's able to stand and walk and operate equipment that otherwise isn't possible for someone in a wheelchair.

And then there's the new navy ships that look so futuristic, like stealth fighters or something.

And now, Carl posts a honest to goodness food replicator: 8O

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he researchers say the printing process brings cooking technologies into the digital age and allows entirely novel textures and flavors to be created that would otherwise be unimaginable and which are unobtainable through traditional cooking techniques.

They say users would be able to control the nutritional value, quality and flavors in each meal through a touch-screen interface and Internet connectivity, which would allow them to manipulate parameters such as carbohydrate or fat content and calories. The design also allows for the food printer to be able to automatically order new ingredients and suggest an alternative ingredient if one runs out.

Ok enough cornucopia, let's get back to our regularly scheduled doom. ;)

A food printer in every home across a world of 6 billion. Both printing ingredients and food out of thin air and running on free energy, for ever more. Big Macs for everyone!!!

Oh, sorry. We just happen to be innovating JIT food technology in JIT capitalism. Gees. Talk about being dense.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'D')o you post this nutritionally deficient information (and that is precisely what most processed food are--a bad meme) to elucidate your own mental anguish or to entertain the preventative-medicine-challenged set.

He is just trolling, eg posting nonsense and expect others to reply on it.

Here's the bigger question...

Does any of this printed food taste good?

I have a hard time believing that this stuff would taste any better than a Lean Cuisine Frozen dinner.

I bet you're a lot of fun at parties.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'S')uch is the nature of the Cornucopia. It is the nutritional equivalent of perpetual motion, free energy, or lazy philosophies, in particular the Singularity. Just wish really really hard with our mighty intellects and . . . poof! Physical laws are superseded.

No need for the dirty, hard decisions humans have always needed to make, The desperate ones we need to make right now. No need for morals, ethics, restraint, care. Just jump on the fun High-Tech Toy Bandwagon to be forever young, free, fat and rich. Don't even have to eat your vegetables.

The guy is truly a schizo. A real asset when it comes to 911, but a real putz the rest of the time.

Most hilarious part is when he is posting some patently stupid, unworkable ideas and predicting that these will be dismissed by those with any knowledge in relevant subjects (eg so called "doomers" on this forum).

Once expected debunking of nonsense is coming, he will fret and whine that some awful anti-science Ludittes are stifling his bright mind and don't allow him to express himself.

The perpetual growth myth is not humourous. In fact, it's downright fatal for the prospects of future generations. It's not something we take lightly unless we haven't a clue or simply can't be bothered.

I suppose that the Food Printer will be almost a giveaway. The cartridges will break your heart in short order though, and you will try buying some cheap cartridges but they won't have the flavor of the good cartridges. After toying with the technology, you will see the machines sitting on ab exercise gadgets and particle board furniture at garage sales for $2, and every time you pick one up everyone will tell you that they no longer make the cartridges to fit that model and to pass on it.

In the end the kids will harp that it sucks not having the Food Printer working and you will finally put your foot down and tell everyone you are going back to slower food with a simpler delivery system, and they will squeal with delight when you give them their favorite Lunchable with a bonus can of spray cheese and a jumbo juice pouch. Then remind them that just like Grandma, you can cook without ever having to measure anything too.
