I just saw this film. If having a religion was so important to the guy running the town (I forgot his name) then he should have just made up his own religion off the top of his head and written it down in a fancy book instead of wasting his time looking for a bibel and then wasting his men and ammo going after Denziel Washington. That's what all the other people who started religions did throughout history. Just light up a joint and let the creativeness flow man

BTW Did anyone else think that lady with the overturned shopping trolley shouting 'help help!' acting as bait was hilarious? Eli wipes out her whole team of thugs and then just a short time later there she is again with another group of men playing the same role. Does she walk around with a sign saying experienced decoy for hire or something? That was funny.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'N')arz, I think a point of the movie is that Eli and his bible-reading nonsense are better, not perfect, than the mayhem and cruelty that reigned.

By the dichotomy was created by the movie producer. Lawless tyrants vs. righteous badass. Sorry but it's a kind of a tired meme.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'I') am not religious at all. I hate fundementalists because they are rich and lazy on the backs of science and technology but superstitious and anti-science politically. I do like the civilizing effect of the Bible in this movie. Here the Bible is good. When the Bible stories were written, as art, as biography, they were good. It is just the Power-Preachers, like Gary Oldman character in the movie, and all the phony preachers and popes that ruin the message. That was the real point of the movie.

I guess, however, in the first half of the movie (what I watched) I didn't see Eli as particularly civilized (unless not raping & murdering random people is how low the bar is), just a man passing thru doing his only thing. If he didn't want trouble he shouldn't have shoved the cat.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'r')ead what I said. Eli respects women, not all women, just some women.

You didn't say some.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'T')he other guys in the movie treat all women like chattel. My point was Eli had a code, that reigned in some of his dark energy. The others did not. It is the CODE of non-violence that made him a sympathetic character.

But he didn't have a code of non-violence.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Narz', 'I')f nothing can harm you you can a moral obligation to help all those in need.
So why not put on a frock and tend to the world's needy?

Unlike the protagonist in this film I'm not immune to harm. Besides, I already have needy dependents to take care of. My point is, if there is no risk there can be no bravery.

Heh heh, the intelligence being used in this thread to analyze 'The Book of Eli' is definitely far more than went into the writing of the actual script itself :-D It's a no-brain style-over-substance actioner which I actually kind of enjoyed. Switching off of all critical faculties is a must for maximum enjoyment, as with any dumb hollywood film. Not a criticism at all, just an observation from someone who has appreciated a good few such movies in his time :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tanada', 'I') think it will break down pretty simply, those who believe in the God of the Bible will love it, or at least find it entertaining, those who have a problem with faith and its effects will hate it.

That is plainly not so, as I give exactly as much weight to the God of the Bible as I do to Thor, Santa and the Staypuft Marshmallow Man, yet I thought this film was fine for what it was.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstar', 'I')t is about faith and also the civilizing effect of the Bible

That just goes to show how open to interpretation any creative endeavour is. To me, it was about how religion can be used for any means, good or bad. If the bad guy got the bible, he would use it to control people in a bad way, but if the good guys got it, it would be used for good purposes. Asinine as that scenario is, to me it meant that people's surrendering of their faculties of logic and rationality(faith) gives tremendous power to those to whom they surrender them. Which is, as I see it, true. Religion wields tremendous power over people, and in the 'right' circumstances can be used to get them to do just about anything.

Again, all this discussion is probably far more than this piece of apocalypse fluff porn deserves. Fun tho :)
